wat shud i do

My job consists of writing device driver and networking stack type of stuff for a proprietary OS in C. That's pretty low level stuff compared to most positions advertised on recruitment websites. As such, I don't think this career has much future. Should I just start learning BEST PRACTICES ASYNCHRONOUS AJAX WEB 2.0 SOLUTIONS on my spare time in order to avoid unemployment and ruining my life?

No.  Write as much as you can, and you will be kept around at least for the purpose of maintaining it.
