Browser is consuming 415MB of RAM, and my system is showing effects. Copying/pasting is delayed, especially from the browser. Textual input is also delayed, so typing this post was a bit painful.

It's likely not the Java VM but the sandbox your browser constrains it to that is causing leaks, my bet is if you ran it as a desktop application it would not leak.
