fucking linux

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-28 3:59

You guys don't even know how pissed I am. I've spend the last 2 days reinstalling ubuntu probably 20 times, and each time things seem to be working fine.

Just when i'm actually surfing around, or just doing the normal shit, watching movies, downloading, and stuff, like that i notice either weird fonts, or lost files....

Lost like half of my 4chan folder, of images, memes, saved threads and shit. I probably lost 500mb of images, and it's because you fucktards always recommend linux, even though windows never does this shit. windows, or even mac, don't require all of this bullshit just to customize your default bootup, and look just fine when you get them installed.

The last thing i want to do is reinstall linux, so what the fuck do i now?? sure, i can reinstall windows, but that doesn't help me get back those files that got erased. i know there are lots of REALLY good file recovery programs for windows, but tell me one that is reliable and good for fucking linux. probably don't have any.

Game don't even work on linux.

I've been running Linux for four years now, didn't have to reinstall once, and did not lose a single file.

Shouldn't have used Ubanto.

The first thing you ever do before switching any system is to make a backup of your imporant files. Since you fail to adhere to this simple principle, it will be pretty hard to help you.

Lost like half of my 4chan folder, of images, memes, saved threads and shit.
And nothing of value was lost.

There's one thing I don't get. People complain how Windows crashes, how Ubanto screws things up, shit, even about the rapidshit. Well, my Windows crashed once in the last three years, I never had any problems with Ubanto, and never, never was I in a situation where I wasn;t able to download anything from (free) rapidshit. Seriously, people, either you're doing something wrong, or I am a really lucky guy.

They're doing something wrong. What many people forget is that computer software systems are complex beasts. Many people don't learn enough critical bits of information that would transform them from a clueless power user to an informed power use which results in faulty systems that would be alright in better hands. It's a PEBKAC error if you will.

Thats because there is no such thing as GNU/Linux, just an egomaniac who can never get enough credit for rewriting some commandline tools.

That's normal - running as designed. POSIX doesn't specify crash behavior, and it just happens that all the applications are broken.

Ask Theodore Tso for more information, but make sure you're not using any proprietary drivers or driving a SUV before doing so.

To my knowledge RMS didn't do a lot of work on coreutils, he was too busy with GNU libc, GNU EMACS, gcc, and reverse-engineering and re-implementing everything that Symbolics ever wrote.

But fine, Linux: Because I always name my house after whoever put the last brick in, not the architect nor the contractor that did everything until that point.

yes, but nobody likes RMS Mattew Stallman,
∴ nobody would use Stallix or GNU or HURD or whatever he would call it. you may aswell call it Hitler OS, i'm not comparing RMS Mattew Stallman to Hitler, i'm just saying that it's named after a horrible horrible person and nobody would want to use it for that reason.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-28 19:54

whoever put the last brick in
So by ``last brick'' you mean kernel of the fucking operating system?

WHBT

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-28 20:21

So by ``last brick'' you mean kernel of the fucking operating system?

I hate it when assholes make like the kernel is so insignificant. Just because any decent programming language is fully kernel-independent, I still directly interface with the kernel on a daily basis because IHBTI still live in 1980.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-28 20:38

That's true.

A OS without a kernel can't run.
A OS with just the kernel can run.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-28 20:39

Linux sucks.  It's hacky, confusing as fuck, and as user-friendly as a getting your head cut off.  I really wouldn't hate it so much if people would fucking stop advertising it as a consumer os.  It's not year of the linux desktop and it never will, now stop forcing your nerdcore software on us, god damn it.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-28 20:43

the problem with linux is that people who use it and cant handle it complain to you and ask you for help

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-28 22:27

It's not year of the linux desktop and it never will,
Hate to break it to you but it's been year of the Linux desktop for ages now.
now stop forcing your nerdcore software on us, god damn it.
Except for the part that nobody forces anything on anybody.

Nobody says that the kernel is insignificant, we just say that the kernel is one part of a larger system. We say it is unfair to label the whole system as Linux as it invites people to think that the GNU system is a part of the Linux system. This is wrong as this thinking is confusing to everyone and calling the system GNU/Linux will go a long way to avoid that confusion.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-28 23:44

>>28
I already know about the GNU project and its contribution to so-called "Linux" systems. And I agree with a lot of things the FSF has to say and do. However, I don't like calling it GNU/Linux because I don't want to sound or look like a retard. Besides, GNU can run without the use of the Linux kernel (HURD, *BSD kernels, etc.)

Actually I'm surprised 4chan wouldn't side with an brash asshole like Theo de Raadt. Seems more like your type of guy than Linus.

When I talk to people, I usually refer to the distribution name: the Ubuntu system, the Suse system, the RHEL system. I also tend to ignore their usage of Linux to mean GNU/Linux; that is, until they show signs of major confusion/ignorance. If someone says to me, "oh but my printer doesn't work on Linux". I would respond, "I cannot continue this conversation at this rate because you are showing signs of confusion. Linux does not handle printer functionality, the system that would take care of your printer is called CUPS." I would then go on to lecture them about GNU and Linux. Only then would I continue about their printing problem, that is, assuming they don't walk away.

Of course, it is completely acceptable when the discussion is directly related to Linux, "that sounds great, but Linux couldn't get my laptop's wireless card to connect to my router the last time I tried it". Network card drivers are part of Linux's domain.

It means you are a hobbyist. Since people like you don't care much about having a comfortable environment you probably only spend only three hours a week tweaking your system, and you probably actually enjoy it, so it not as much as a waste of time as it would be for non-hobbyists who need to rely on their machines. How much is your time worth? Given that you develop on Linux, I guess the answer is "not much".
Linux is only free if your time has no value.

I care to have a comfortable environment. It was very easy to get. I spend less than half an hour a week tweaking my system. If other people want a preconfigured system at no effort to themself, I recommend that they hire an expert to do that.

You're a fucking retard. Noone configures/tweaks linux on weekly basis. You do it once.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-29 12:46

Are you saying that your Linux installation is stable? No servers - I am talking of computers that run real desktop stuff such as web browsers and even music players.
Everytime X refuses to start you must figure out what went wrong from the logs and change the config file accordingly. Each time you plug in an USB device, you'll have to look all over the internet for the suitable driver, then recompile your kernel. If you don't find it, don't bother asking, the only answer you will ever get is "Just write the driver yourself you lazy bum". Everytime you need to install a new program, you run the risk of jeopardizing your system by upgrading libraries to versions that are incompatible with your current programs, then you need to spend sometimes up to an hour to read its man page.

If Linux wastes less than 3 hours per week per machine of your time, either you're not actually using your install, either you are running a server with Debian Stable.
People choose Linux because shits goes wrong and you get to dick with computers. What would be the point of using Linux if you never had a reason to go under the hood?

"Everytime X refuses to start" -> only when you configure it after your linux installation
"look all over the internet for the suitable driver" -> yes, back in the 90ies
"recompile your kernel" -> loading modules, 90ies etc.
"libraries to versions that are incomaptible" -> they are always compatible

What is this, ten years ago? My desktop's run for ten months without having a problem due to such issues, and ten months ago the issue was installation, which took a few hours to get everything perfect, at most. I think you need to do a little updating on how linux works nowadays. Not to mention I've had five years since I last had to look up a usb driver. HAL loads fucking everything, nowadays. Fuck, my wireless keyboard's special volume and music keys worked straight off the bat, and they're not even standard for a keyboard.
