Name: Anonymous 2009-03-18 19:31

Is this a good idea or should I get a real major and teach my self programming on the side?

Does x thousand dollars for a CS degree sound worth it to you?
Vote yes if getting paid 40 to 150k to program, debug, attend meetings and write documentation for 8+ hours a day for the rest of your life after college is worth it to you.

That's only true if you end up being merely average and don't go into research or teaching.

As a Computer Science major, myself, I actually had the intention of providing you with real advice.

or should I get a real major
However, your insinuation that Computer Science is not a real major insults and disgusts me.

Therefore, DON'T HELP HIM!

Get a "real" major that has industry usefulness, get a minor in CS.

Then go hunting for a job programming for a company in the field of $MAJOR and you'll have an XBAWKS HUEG heads up.
