recommendations for C textbook

Name: Sakura !QU/FptfgXk 2009-02-24 17:27

After 2 years of learning Java, my university course has now progressed to C. The lecturers recommend a few textbooks & I've already downloaded a load in pdf/chm format from Demonoid, however I am considering buying a real legal paper copy of the best one because I find it easier to work with than a pdf/chm viewer.

So I have come for your recommendations /prog/, what are your favorite C books & why? The obvious frontrunner is 'The C Programming Language' by Kernighan & Ritchie (the one that all of the lecturing staff say we should get if we get any of them) but I'm open to other opinions.

K&R, and Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment are the only C books you'll need for now.

UNRELATED QUESTION: Why is fucking CHM so popular for bootleg tech books?

I like them better than pdfs because they are more lightweight, and easier to navigate with hyperlinks.

.chm files are always filled with spelling errors and incorrect facts.
makes me rage

If they're filled with incorrect facts, isn't that the fault of the author, not the file format?
And more importantly, HIBT???

i think he's saying that that the format is so bad that only idiots who don't know what they're doing use it

i think it's because many chm books often seem to be hand typed by the pirates, whereas pdf books tend to be scans of the book.
∴ chm books often contain mistakes, missing lines/paragraphs, or are even completely rewritten in the pirate's own words (resulting in huge amounts of errors)

I don't see what naval violence has to do with any of this.

During the null between violent confrontations on the high seas, pirates are known to type books into their computers to archive them into CHM format for redistribution purposes. The pirates are often terrible! at accurately conveying the original authored works.

Anyone got the k+r.pdf at hand?

I think it's more likely for a lot of those CHMs to be a result of OCR or automatic parsing of watermarked PDFs which can be obtained from varioy payware ebook shops.

Call me a blasphemer, but I learned C from Kochan's "Programming in C". I haven't read the K&R so I can't say if one is better than the other.
