Good one, Taro.

In insert mode press ^R=, you can then enter a VimScript expression and the result gets inserted. You can use it as a simple calculator, but you can also do more complex stuff, e.g. typing line(".") inserts the current line number.

Here's my bit of help:

``Escape this colon thing,
quit and never return''

It's a mnemonic for the VIM quitting sequence,   esc;q!ret
Esc = escape,
; = colon,
q = quit,
! = never,
ret = return.

:)

im a vim power user and know the editor very well
heres a good tip for a beginning vim user

use the hjkl keys instead of the arrow keys

if you do this it means whenever you see a vim user using the arrows, you can boast that you dont use the arrows because youre a more skilled vim user.
 dont try this on an emacs user; it may backfire.

Uhh... using the hjkl keys does have a pratcial purpose: you don't have to take your fingers off home row.

what about if i'm using dvorak, should i change them

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-17 17:55

dont try this on an emacs user; it may backfire.
I am an EMACS user and I happily utilise the C-p/n/f/b instead of arrows. This way, I don't have to move my hand to the area near the border of the keyboard.

Name: Anonymous 2008-08-17 19:02

I'm fast with the arrow keys, and using them (as well as Home/End/PgUp/PgDown) as standalone keys is far more comfortable than having to switch modes or having to hold Ctrl, more so if you have to hold Shift to select (and modal selection blows too when you want it to go away or want to move without selecting).

Outside that, I don't see much harm in using other keys for movement (for example, I always use WSAD for gaming because, as in consoles, I'm used to control movement with my left hand).

My gripe is, why are classic UNIX users (vim) and GNU users (emacs) such douchebags when choosing keys? HJKL? In a row? That's fucking stupid! Why not IJKL? IJKM? No! They have to make it stupid and clumsy, otherwise it wouldn't be vim! And emacs... PNFB? This is insane! Who gives a shit what the keys stand for! They are all over the keyboard! Fucking idiots.

You know, you can easily customise the EMACS keys if you don't like them.
