Lack of SICP discussion is troubling

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-24 21:28

Hello /prog/ers the lack of discussion of SICP is troubling to me.  Have visitors stopped reading/watching lectures?  Have all the members gained complete understanding of said book/lectures?

Also what about SICM?

Let us make an effort to discuss these and other teachings of sussman's.

Didn't know about SICM. Thanks for that.

"he's a son of a bitch"
"mathematical notation fundamentally sucks"
what is the Sussman saying for d in "d/dt"?
"stallman and i worked on a program that does this and does what i do"  where is this program that embodies the Sussman

the only good part of SICP is the register machine

Strange that you should make this thread, because I'm going to be taking a course in September that uses SICP.

I just started reading SICP and now I know why you guys were so addicte to getting others to read it. It's so fucking AWESOME, and to think I haven't even reached Satori yet.

It's always nice to see a bronzed, toned Sussman.

I'm pretty sure that's not an SICP wizard but a math wizard.

i started reading SICM but you have to use an older linux or something to run the programs so i sorta got bored... installing some old debian distro on vmware now. damn /prog/

Read SICM

It's funny, because I'm considering doing so.

I tried, but the Scheme needed for the code wouldn't run. Too bad they based it on such a poorly specified language.

Not until I finish SICP Ultimate Edition.

Is there anywhere I can easily download the SICP and SICM texts in PDF/HTML/other format without having to crawl through the MIT site?

All the SICP PDFs I've seen so far were generated from spidering the MIT site, and hence contain such things as images instead of properly typeset equations, rather aliased figures, and other annoyances.

This anon is currently retypesetting SICP in PDF form.

Just ask MIT for the TEX source.

TOC hasn't been generated, nor has the format been finalized.

Looks great, keep up the good work as the saying goes.

You should make the linewidth smaller, so have less words on a line. Shorter lines reads much easier.

My only complaint is that it isn't finished. Can we get an ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) on when it will be completed?

I like the vector graphics title page. The layout of the text is nice but needs a bit of work.

You mean \hsize=15cm, just like the REAL book?

When I finish reading it.

Any TEX wizards want to suggest macros for the major, minor, and subminor section headings? I've got the code listing thing almost figured out.

maybe someone could split the workload and /prog/ could do it as a group? Like when the harry potter book was leaked online.
