installing ubanto

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-06 7:35

i'm a bsdfag so i don't know shit about anything but you hear a lot about ubanto and i've even told my mother that if she can't afford wintendo, i'll install ubanto, not that she cares or knows what ubanto is

anyways, a thought hit me last night, the software that makes up the ubanto linsux distribution, does it use anything specific for the linsux kernel? like any piece of technology that isn't available in other operating system kernels or simply is uniquely modeled in the linsux kernel so it's not compatible

because if it doesn't, then basically if the software written for ubanto is well written, posix compatible, you could 'install' ubanto on any other posix unix-like system, like bsd

tl;dr: does anyone here know if the software packaged in ubanto linsux uses any linsux kernel specific features?

You can certainly hack it together, most of the important pieces (Gnome, Firefox, MPlayer, Thunderbird, Gimp, etc) are in ports. What you'll find though is that the BSD installation process hasn't been streamlined like Ubanto. You'll have to install the OS (which some people think is difficult -- there are no flashy window GUIs oh noes), and then you'll have to install everything from ports (or whatever package system you use).

What people mistaken call "Linux software" is (usually) more correctly called "POSIX portable software". GNOME and KDE is POSIX portable. I know this because I did some work porting GNOME and KDE to the Hurd and I only had to fix up a couple of Linux specific assumptions.

Is this some kind of expert troll?

Kick it up a notch, someone forward >>1's post to Theo and write "This is what the average OpenBSD user sounds like."

More correct?  The fuck, seriously?

POSIX doesn't even have a window system.  Or a display of any kind.  How could something like that run on it?

I just thought everyone should know the proper way to pronounce ubuntu

ooh (as in ooh la la)
boon (as in toon, but with a b)
two (as in the number 2)
ooh-boon-2

Your mouth should be puckered like a monkey while saying this.

Im looking for an ubanto CD, it cant be pinku (thats japanese for pink) or any girl color. It has to be of 2 or more kotoba (thats japanese for 2 compartments) and has be be chibi (small) sized. And has to be really kawaii (cute). Also It has to be about 10-20 bux. And you have to post pics of it first (i want to make shure it's kawaii [cute]). And it would be nice if it came with pretty GUI buttons (WITH drop shadows). OH! and it CANNOT have any cartoon pictures, or be made out of plastic. It has to be made of ceramic, or something like that. Also it would be nice if it was made in japan. and not in china or corea (korea) or whatever. I have found an ubanto CD similar to the one im describing in e-bay, but it was the alternative install, and i dont want my gohan (eyes) to have to read text (it can get difficult and i would not like that, plus GUI looks more kawaii)

This post is redundant and adds nothing, just like ubunto

yeah i'm prepared that it would involve some hacking, lol i'm no linsux fag so i know about terminal commands pretty well and i am pretty cool guy for this

and to install gnu libc and all the gnu tools on freebsd is not hard either, but the reason i ask on /prog/ is to see if someone here knows that any of the ubanto software uses linux kernel specific features

which i highly doubt, i wouldn't be surprised at all if most of their native software had to be heavily modified to compile on bsd systems but it is possible as long as it's all written in c

so the point is that ubanto is nothing but someone holding ur hand through the world of posix and unix-like systems

if i wanted to spend time with it, i could get my mom the same kind of system on a bsd kernel

Thats just too much of a library  that allows you  to enter binary  numbers Computer programmers  are more advanced  They use base  Net Server Fork  sub process request  1 while print.
