C vs C++

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-23 6:43

Which is a better language to learn? Why is it imperative, according to some, to learn C before learning C++?
Can I learn C++ without learning C?

C. Because C++ is a filthy hack adding no functionality worth having. No.

C++. Because C is an outdated hack lacking all the important functionality. No.

Sepples is C with an added class-mess that you could master for no particular reason or gain.

C. It's actually useful and for many things necessary (like it or not). C++ is a horrible mess of poorly-implemented, useless crap thrown upon C. Avoid at all costs.

C++ rules -- once you've figured out RAII, you'll never go back unless you absolutely have to (like programming close to the metal for network appliances, a couple of months of which is the only bit of pure C I've done in the last decade).

And once you've "figured out" garbage collection, you'll never go back to Sepples.

Garbage collection doesn't tidy up file handles, database sessions, graphics contexts, or anything but memory.

Enjoy your try/finally or using(){} clauses.
