C vs C++

Which is a better language to learn? Why is it imperative, according to some, to learn C before learning C++?
Can I learn C++ without learning C?

C++ rules -- once you've figured out RAII, you'll never go back unless you absolutely have to (like programming close to the metal for network appliances, a couple of months of which is the only bit of pure C I've done in the last decade).
