how do I wrote code

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-11 11:48 ID:gSW/XLOR

Seriously, I am determined to learn some programming stuff. What is a good language to start for an almost complete beginner (lol, HTML/basic CSS)?
I do not want to do anything serious yet, just write some code that will be a good introduction to C.

Help/thanks in advance.

If you have a good academic background, and are used to abstractions, you can do it the right way by reading SICP and learning Scheme.

If you don't, you can try K&R and learn C, then read SICP and learn Scheme.

Don't bother with any of: Visual Basic, Java, C#, C++.

I don't think SICP is appropriate. I always thought that it taught computing science, not programming. They're not the same thing. OP wants to learn programming.

there's the problem. people without an understanding of computer science wnating to program.

5 here.  You convinced me.  We should give OP what he/she needs (SICP), not what they think they need (programming).

But all coders I know say that SICP is not for beginners.

The sole purpose of SICP is to act as a textbook for the introductory MIT CS course, 6.001. If your coder friends think SICP is not for beginners, that's simply because they aren't even beginners themselves.

Of course. What were you thinking? I remember when my kid brother saw crap I was doing with some library I wrote. He went and say "wow, I want to have libraries!". No. He wanted to learn to program. He wanted to read SICP, just he didn't know yet what he wanted.

>>9
As a matter of fact, SICP is a book to teach programming for beginners. MIT beginners, though. So you better be well prepared.

IP address != Person
Some of us have more than one.

l was browsing my old books and I found a Lisp handbook. Won't this be a good introduction?

Oh so Anonymous g+2iw1I5 has several IP addresses. How fucking nice. Well, now excuse us, the poor folk, who have only one IP address shared with 10 niggers using NAT.

>>14
Depends, is it SICP?

>>15
Nope, just some regular book. The title simply reads "Lisp". I couldn't have found anything better (or anything else).

If you need a Scheme implementation, DrScheme ( http://www.drscheme.org/ ) is good for learners.

I just began reading HTDP, I'm already using DrScheme. I guess I'll read SICP after this. Thanks.

SICP and HTDP are completely useless

YOU HAVE TO READ THE WIZARD BOOK. IF ITS NOT THE WIZARD BOOK, ITS SHIT.

;_;

This is my thread, and it brings back the memories of reading SICP for the first time, discovering the Sussman, and being proud of finding some mistakes in the Book. These were the good days, today I write PHP scripts for a living.

You could make something to write (compile-to) PHP scripts for you!

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-21 17:17

DScript
Dark Signs includes its own scripting language, codenamed D-SCRIPT. It has full support for the console interface, and supports advanced programming commands such as IF...ELSE...ENDIF, LOOPS, PAUSE, VARIABLES, and much, much more. This alone gives Dark Signs an amazing amount of flexibility.

Commands
Dark Signs is much, much, more than CONNECT, CRACK, DISCONNECT. Already, the console features over 60 unique commands, and over 40 function commands which can be used in combination with D-SCRIPT.

Customize
Edit your in game system files... just the way you want. Change your startup script, make it do what you want when the game starts. You can even make it start
playing music files automatically.

Directory Structure
Dark Signs features its own unique directory structure to use in the console. This means it has seperate directories where you can store files. It allows you to create new folders and files, and move them around.

I played this, years ago. It's an interesting concept. The storyline was pretty buggy, though.
