PHP does suck, but >>11
is right. It's easy to learn and in common use, thus profitable.
There's no way to get around reading the book, really. If you're like me you may find it easier to make yourself use an ebook or instructional website, but you need willpower.

Python kicks PHP's ass pretty thoroughly as a web language, and I can think of several other languages that probably do as well. If nobody wants to touch PHP with a ten foot pole for anything outside its very narrow application as a web-scripting environment, that should be a warning to you.
If your philosophy is to target only the most popular tech at any time, history shows that you end up using some pretty ugly shit.

I wrote my own Haskell program which is much nicer, supports regex and can find any tripcode instantly by reversing the hash algorithm in a way your brain could never comprehend.
PHP is my bread and butter and I wouldn't trade it for anything except maybe that crazy perl/PHP mix one guy made, I forget what its called but it looks fantastic in the way that, when you look at a mountain of dead babies you think "hells yes!" PHP also just makes a little more sense when I see the source code, more so than most other languages. Whereas I have to always have my Perl book on hand, PHP is all stored up here *points to head*, oh and here too *points to Firefox PHP Manual quick search*
