yes, that is a single byte. 0xc3, which is the 'ret' instruction on x86. it should work on any x86 operating system that isn't completely braindead, and is known to work on at least one that is.

on some operating systems you can just execute an empty file and get the same result, but windows doesn't like that.

Using the Unicode Transformation Format UTF-8 or the Unicode Transformation Format UTF-16, it requires two octets. Using the Unicode Transformation Format UTF-32, it requires four octets. You fail.
