good java book for knowledgable programmers?

Name: Anonymous 2007-01-04 3:35

Yeah, I know Java sucks, but after much frustration I've concluded that I need to learn it because, well, I'd like to start my career before I get my first kidney stone or AARP newsletter.  Jesus christ the software industry's in the shitter right now.

Can someone recommend a Java book that's written in a way that's aimed at people who are already deeply knowledgable about programming and computer science?  I have a strong foundation in C, C++, LISP, Prolog, and Assembly, so I don't need a book that's written for complete newbs.  I've programmed in Java before, too, but I've only the fundamental understanding of it, not a deeper understanding of its keywords, abilities, syntaxes, etc, the whole kitten kaboodle.

It's time to move.

As in move out of the country.

It's wonderful elsewhere. Really.

India?  That's where all the C++ jobs are going, it looks.

I don't know, Bombay looks slummy.  Indians are nice, but too unhygenic.

hmm, well, I have a book on java. let me dig it out here...

Data Abstraction & Problem Solving with JavaTM
-----WALLS & MIRRORS

By: Frank M Carrano and Janet J Prichard.

It's basically a data structures book, but ssuming the course is using java. It seems to cover every feature in java that I myself am aware of. It's got some algorithms and data structures, and generics and stuff. You might want to check out other resources for other java things, like android, java applets, or whatever. Stuff isn't necessarily about anything, but you will need familiarity with in order to get anything done. yall know how that goes.
