A coalition of Certified Java Experts have announced that Ruby is Considered Evil, and Bad Practice. They argue that Ruby is not Enterprise Ready, has poor support for XML and other Enterprise Solutions and that it is not Scalable.
The coalition suggests switching to Java, the leader in the Programming Market, the language of serious Enterprise Programmers that know what a Paradigm Shift is -- Java.
I bet the Java implementation is rather Enterprisey. It's better in Ruby where you can implement it yourself if simply using strings filled with byte data served as Unicode is not good enough.

Actually, Unicode is one of the few things Java does well. It uses IBM's ICU, a C++ Unicode library.

Yes. However, how do I make it use ASCII? I tried writing a simple webserver in Java once, but got into difficulties.

A simple webserver? In Java? Verily you are kidding.
1. Get 300 application servers.
2. Use Java Enterprise.
3. Hire 1000 Certified Java programmers.
4. Sit back and relax.
5. ????
6. Profit (while the servers do not crash because they can not handle more than one user each).

It uses IBM's ICU
That means it handles it horribly
