Good Place to learn Objective C?

Name: BMP 2005-01-19 22:37

I've decided that one of these days, I need to learn a programming language and get something accomplished. Now, I'm on OS X, which favors Objective C....I believe (correct me if I'm wrong), so that would be the logical jump. But since OS X is a unix breed, gcc and what have you are in full force, so any guide written for a unix compy should be fine.

If someone has some OS X specific information (regarding cocoa and what have you) for total newbies, I'd pee myself with joy. However, if I can just get a command line program to make fun of me, I'll be happy.

Of course, if you've got a better idea (and I bet quite a few will) go ahead and chime in. Anyone?

While Objective-C is much easier than C++, you still need to know plain vanilla C to use it. But here is a starting point for you:

A programmer who doesn't know C is like a priest who doesn't know the Lord's Prayer...

From the silence I surmise #1 has been scarred for life by hist first exposure to programming and left us for good.

We should have given him Fortran77.

I don't know what it's worth, but I found this PDF on Apple's web site: http://tinyurl.com/4u388

Making new threads is a waste, we should reuse old threads until they hit 1000

This is a legendary quote
It's made of truth and win

Obj C is made of win and magnificent implementation of objects. I heart it.

This thread is now about Java sucks

I support this motion

But answer me this, is Java a good gateway for other better languages? I herd C++ is a hard language to dive at straight on.

Start with Java and you just might end up falling in love with Python :)

Programming language fanboyism is retarded.

Start with Java and you might end up quitting your job/career
Fixed

Python is nice, but I don't know if it'd be the best idea to start with it (you don't want to get thrown stuff like "UNBOUND METHOD NOOB HA HA" on your face when you try your first lines of codes, do you?). Besides Python (or Ruby), I recommend C (again, probably not as first, you don't want to do *(int *)&x[**p] in your first month).

One of my friends started his career writing Java programs and eventually got so stressed he went on the sick for months and quit.

Though come to think of it, it was more because his brother transformed into his sister. But programming Java every day probably didn't help.

come to think of it, it was more because his brother transformed into his sister

Why would that bother him so much? A year or so of Java would have me climbing the walls, but my brother changing sex wouldn't rate more than a 'meh, happens'.

If your brother turned into your sister... would it be okay to hit it?

I dunno, I thought it was an improvement.

No, cause he's a fag and still a he, but he may be cursing his Y chromosome because if he had been born a girl (as he wanted) they could have been fucking.

Start with Java and you just might end up failing in love with Python :)
FTFY

I don't hate Python at all, in fact it looks kinda hearty for quick-'n-dirty scripting, even google use it. However, I wouldn't choose it for larger projects.

Don't change these.
