Marx's ideas have been extremely politicized and it is difficult to avoid this in any discussion.

I believe a reasonable understanding of Marxism and its impact in the 20th century is not so much a case of him being wrong or right about everything, as his detractors and proponents will shout from the rooftops, but rather accepting that some of his ideas didn't play out in history while welcoming his abstract perspective of society.

For instance history has shown it was the development of an educated middle class that brought about the political liberalization which in turn allowed the working class to pass social welfare or push for "democratic socialism", no revolution, no middle class perpetuating the system that benefited them. Capitalism has also been proven to be less of a system created by the ruling class and more of a grudgingly accepted necessity, Suharto, the Asian tigers, Pinochet and Franco all saw their power wane as their economies increasingly capitalized

I believe Karl Marx broke down society logically, even if he was not the first to do so it has had an enormous impact on politics, I can't help but use his terminology when trying to explain various concepts, from reactionaries and petite-bourgeois to the proletariat and the means of production. The world is more complex than the class system and even concerning the class system Marx's breakdown is not sufficient for most things. You would not be doing yourself a favor intentionally trying to avoid Marx's contribution however.

The greatest thing about conservatism and anti-Marxism is that it gets all the trash people (who probably should be Marxist) to speak the loudest against it. A marketing guy once said that if you want to appeal to a social class, you display the people on the next rung up. So industrial workers are appealing to welfare people. Lawyers are appealing to industrial workers. Capitalists are appealing to lawyers. Royalty is appealing to capitalists. God is appealing to royalty.

So you put on all these TV shows that make them all strive to be better, and plant the seed that rebelling against the system makes them smelly and bad.
