As it stands, most people are going to throw their votes at one of the two main candidates with out giving it much thought or understanding of the issues at hand. They'll be blindly following party allegiance or so poorly informed they won't recognize the other choices.
If you cast your vote into the ocean of other votes for those two personalities will make no difference at all. Your one vote isn't going to sway the election.
So, take your vote over the a third party candidate, make a statement and help add to their numbers. If enough people do this the idea of a third party candidate will sound more viable/reasonable for the next time around. And maybe at some point down the line people won't have to choose between a giant douche and a turd sandwich.
If you haven't noticed already, the two party system has been nothing but a giant cluster fuck of fail and aids. And that shit isn't going to change until people start doing things differently, like by not buying into false choices like Obama/McCain.
