Partly it's a leave-over from the cold war (when the Arabs were up Soviet asses long before America 'took a side'), partly it's the fact that, SHOCK HORROR, Israel is actually a capitalist, liberal democracy, partly because it is Americas only guaranteed ally in the region (even moderate Arab states like Egypt, Jordan etc could go the way of Iran given the right circumstances, and partly because Israel is an excellent geopolitical bargaining chip that America can use. The Arabs cannot defeat Israel; their only hope is to use diplomatic pressure to work against it. Withtout the Soviets, they have to turn to America, and thus America can secure regional stability and a regional guarantee in the form of a strong Israel. It was an excellent strategy, but one which the current admin seems to have fundamentally misunderstood.
