Education

Name: Anonymous 2007-07-04 7:19 ID:1AZg/MIf

Here are some wonderful quotes concerning "education" as most people view it.

Education is something that schooling gets in the way of.

Most people are under the false impression that education and schooling are synonymous.

Just say no to schooling and drugs. Go out and actually learn things instead of pretending to learn things.

Don't get a piece of paper that tricks people into thinking you're smart. Actually become smart.

Why are our children being forced against their will with threat of imprisonment to go to crappy public schools that brainwash them, teach them how to have sex and do drugs, and ruin any potential they had at becoming smart, reasonable people?

The 5 GED (General Educational Development) tests represent what an average American high school graduate should be able to answer. Yet studies have shown average high school graduates when tested have failed the GED tests. Ironically some of its critics who likely have never seen the test refer to it as "too easy".

Education as most people view it unfortunately does not represent a person's knowledge or effort. What it does represent is who had the most money to buy the best degrees from the best universities.

A poor rundown school in the Democratic Republic of the Congo teaches more than why an average American one teaches.

Schooling isn't about education, it's about indoctrination.

I should really convert to Judaism one of these days.  What perks are there?

Dropping out is a good decision if you want to be smart. If you care about making money and getting a piece of paper that tricks people into thinking you're smart when you really aren't, stay in school.

not really, but thinking you'll be a millionaire just because you have a piece of paper that makes people think you're smart is silly.

Some of the people who graduate are idiots, and some aren't. All the people I've seen drop out were idiots.

Sorry guys. D:

University is very much a case of "lead a horse to water". But even you're foolish enough to learn nothing, that bit of paper is worth the effort; this isn't the 50s (or 80s) anymore, and most white-collar jobs require a degree just to get in the interviewer's door. Likewise, if said person can't see how much dropping out diminishes their future prospects, they're plain stupid.

Anybody who thinks otherwise should learn some probability and rudimentary statistics (and look at a job ad).

schooling does teach people shit. >>9

It teaches you basic skills you would need to go out and educate yourself, like basic math for example.

If there was no schooling, other people wouldnt simply go out and learn...they would be learning some stuff but nothing fucking useful or beneficial to society. Having no schooling now of days in a developed country can only hinder you in daily life, just like what >>10 said. (except that not all dropouts are stupid)

University proves that you can keep your life together for at least three years and assuming it's not some useless art degree, you're not going to be a total retard.

Dropping out of school and becoming a successful entrepreneur like Bill Gates and earning megabucks sounds like a great idea, however do you know just how low the success rate of that is? How many business start-ups fail in the first year?

When you're in your 30's, knee deep in debt from failed business ventures you'll be wishing you at least started off with a decent education to fall back on.

Just look at an average university student's MySpace. They are incapable of using proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation, even ones who are majoring in English. They are incapable of locating Iraq on a map yet discuss the Iraq War like they're experts.

They can't even do the professions that they were allegedly studying for 4 years in college any better than a fifth grader, if not worse. Yet they're considered experts because they have degrees. The system is based on lies. You all can participate if you care about money that much. I'm not participating.

I'll always be happy knowing I'm smarter and more hard working than them even if society lies to itself and says the people who can't spell correctly, can't locate countries on a map, can't do math, among other things are smarter than me.

The problem is that they even chose to solicit their information on the Internet or even to use MySpace to begin with. A paper certainly is by no means an indicator of intelligence or job performance skills, but I'm sure with a casual conversation with someone will give privy to you as far as what type of character they are and whether or not they take work seriously.

>>13

they're (or we're as I'm stuyding in a university, too) not more intelligente but better educated
the difference is that someone who has gone through those 4 years trained the stuff he's supposed to do a little bit and knows where to look when searching for more information
there's no doubt that you could mix some new chemicals or whatsoever but you would need much more time until you're finished
an employer doesn't want his employees to learn the basics when they're supposed to work on the product

oh wait, you were complaining that you do have the skills but no one cares
well, if you do then you should be allowed to prove it

You're a perfect example of what 13 meant by "incapable of using proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation".

Go suck on another beer bong, ass-hat.

see, this ignorance is why you people are regarded as not capable of doing jobs that require higher education

Higher education is a myth.

Education rears disciples, imitators, and routinists, not pioneers of new ideas and creative geniuses. The schools are not nurseries of progress and improvement, but conservatories of tradition and unvarying modes of thought. - Ludwig Von Mises

We, the people who understand these principles, need to aggregate. We are on the losing end, and those of you who know, know.

No, we're angry that society looks up to those people when truth is, they're stupid and incapable of the doing the jobs they're supposed to be experts at.

It's a matter of numbers. Look at it like this: which population of people is more likely to succeed:
* those who have graduated
* those who have not

Having a degree is not an indicator that a person is intelligent or knowledgeable, but it's more likely than someone who is not.

If education is such a terrible thing, care to point out any recent scientists who don't have a degree?

Shit, someone just displayed a copious ammount of ignorance!
Learn from this mistake young padawan, that when the adults speak, use either education or wikipedia before opening mouth, else massive unerasable embarrassment shall ensue.

Ummm, I think >>29 was on the pro-education side of the argument.

A piece of paper does indeed not give any indication of a students' capabilities. A smart student, however, tries to learn something from his education.

And I'm a non-native English speaker who can write with proper grammar and punctuation, something I probably wouldn't have accomplished without my education.

There are types of educated people, I'm sure everyone remembers this clearly in high school where all 3 types are present. This has nothing to do with social groups though generally nerds do better.

1: Apathetics, like the OP they don''t see any benefit in school. They at most do enough to prove they are not a retard and plan to learn a marketable skill like vehicle mechanics after leaving. At worst they become manual labourers, at best they specialise in a particular trade. They believe there is no point.

2: Studious, not the most succesful type. They take education seriously generally focussing on a few related subjects like maths and science or geography and history. At worst they become blue collar workers, at best they manage to go to university and become a professional of some sort. They believe high grades = success.

3: Realistic, not the most stable type. They recognise that "schooling" can be pointless and so do not follow pointless subjects like art with as much vigour as type 2. On the other hand they do recognise that some schooling is useful leaning towards subjects they feel solves problems, helps them communicate their ideas and employ their vision. They believe they have not made sense of the world yet.

I don't view myself as anyone of those types, but that may just be me.
You can say I was apathetic because I became an engineer and fucking up my school grades (oh yeah, i get paid way above average, while my peers get paid average for straining themselves at school while i sat back....and went to sleep). You can say I was realstic/studious because I heavily studied what i was interested in, philosophy, metaphysics, engineering and physics. I'd put my class in that of the people that do not recognise school, and believe that intellectuals will rise naturally, by studying what they think is appropriate.

Don't change these.
