The LEFT and RIGHT are NOT the same as Democrats and Republicans. Left-wing and Right-wing are political ideologies. In fact, the terms "liberal" and "conservative" are misonomers to an extent, when referring to political ideologies. For instance, the The "Liberal Democratic" Party of Japan is actually a right-wing party, probably the most right-wing party in Japan (not counting the National Socialist Japanese Workers and Welfare Party, which is only a minor contender in their political arena).
The Democratic Party and the Republican Party are only the names of political parties, practically glorified sports teams. The ideals of the left and the ideals of the right haven't changed much since they were first established as political ideologies, evolving mainly to address progession in technology, and other societal changes.
The constituencies of both parties, on the other hand, have changed greatly, with a shift about half a decade ago based on a civil rights issue. Progessives and liberals (mostly left-wing) have always been arguing for civil rights. Those who subscribed to the right-wing ideologies have always been on the opposing side. In fact, contrary to what
>>1 states, Jews were some of the most vocal non-black champions of black suffrage and civil rights during the civil rights movement. Currently, in 2007, those who are mostly against civil rights (whether it be in regards to gays, blacks, Mexicans, etc.) are in the Republican Party, and those who are mostly arguing in favor are in the Democratic Party. Whether the state of these two parties regarding this social issue could change in the near future nobody knows. The fact that this could happen, though, and has happened, just goes to show that one should not base their political views on what a party says, but what they personally believe in, based on careful research and personal experience.
Which is why only an idiot will base their political views solely on what the parties say. A rational person will look at both political ideologies, find which aspects of both of them that they agree with, and then find the party who best represents these personal views.
Too many people confuse Left-wing/Liberal and Right-wing/Conservative with the parties that they are currently consolidated in. They couldn't be more wrong.
