Why do police ask for your religion?

I was arrested for sitting on a park bench on October 30th and they asked what religion I was.

I don't see how that's relative to anything at all, even a hate crime, seeing as what religion you are is irrelevant to your actions within your crime.

I don't think police do that regularly.. I've never seen them ask someone what their religion is while arresting them.

Religion has just as relevance as Race and Gender, if not moreso.
Race/Gender are essentially aesthetics that they may or may not be able to twist into a statistic (That may or may not be valid), while religion generally encompasses a set of beliefs that could explain motive, although I can't see how your religion could have any concievable bearing on why you would sit on a bench).
