Atheism has no church, no preachers, no canonized scriptures.  It cannot spread memetically like Christianity because it lacks these meme producing structures.  It also lacks a spiritual or supernatural reward.  How could Atheism become more popular, more widespread, and more acknowledged without appearing as a sect, a cult, or its own religion?

Atheism is self-evident, it doesn't need to be turned into some gay ass hippy religion.

Stupid hippies.

But many people are presented with lies as truth as they grow up.

'lies' and 'truth' are relavent terms when it comes to philosophy and religion. it's up to the individual to seek what he finds to be true or a lie.

Religion exists for comfort, safety and moral guidance. Every culture around the world has developed some kind of god, gods, or deities to worship upon, because it's a hellava lot more reassuring to know that you have the chance to appease a god that's making bad shit happen to you, rather than the idea that bad shit JUST happens, and no amount of effort on your part can magically change it.

Religion is like the warm embrace of a mother, safe, secure, but ultimately sheltering. There will one day be a time where man separates himself with religion, like an adolescent would a mother, and find out about the world his own way, for better or worse. If you think about it, all these wars, religious extremists, cults, and general sin in the world, these are all acts of children, fighting with one another when they dont know any better.

If there is a god, he's there simply for guidance until humanity as a whole no longer needs him, and moves on to a new beginning in the life of man and a new insight into our world and how it functions and how we function in it. If there is a god, at this time, god will still be there. But I believe, like a loving parent, god will monitor from a distance without interfering.

Atheism must be shoved down people's throats in order for the world to improve in any meaningful way.  I'm serious about this.

This is the main reason why I'm a communist.

It's because we have reached a point in human history where religion is no longer needed. As a support structure for society and the human psyche, it is no longer needed and its lies and constant stupidity make it less and less desirable. Atheist is like an awakening, it will continue to happen until we have only small cults and the larger portion of the world is nonreligious, and secular. Not to say that people wont beleive in god, or other spiritual/religious ideas, but the large, centralized religions will die out.

Imagine someone using a crutch to walk, then he is able to walk, he throws away the crutch. That crutch is religion.

Shut the fuck up
Everyone must come to atheism in their own way and by themselves. If we just shove them down their throat, we are no better than the religions we hate and are just fascists.
GTFO you stupid dumb fuck
BTW communism totally fails

We are moving towards that point, but we aren't there yet. The power of the Catholic church is a big example. IMO, church and state should be completely separate, but I don't think large centralized religions need too/should die out. I happen to like religion, although I am not spiritual at all. I believe in God, but I live my life according to science and facts. Contraceptives, legal abortions, evolution, pre-marital sex, all that good stuff. Also,

Communism doesn't always fail. The Native Americans had pretty much a communist utoptia. In today's world, Communism doesn't work, but Capitalism has some big flaws too.

>>9 Up to 1850, the affluence and well-being of humanity grew about 50 %. From 1850 to today it has grown about 900 %. And our rivers run black and we have no control of our governments, ourselves or our cultures any longer. The capacity of infinite wants has become our cornucopia. Our incapacity to sacrifice short-term desires for bigger long-term rewards is simply due to poor adaptation. It will probably be our unmaking.

Durr durr, that wasn't communism. It was somewhat communism like, but tribes and even inviduals practiced trading and there was private property although many considered that you can't own land.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-04 9:35

STFU AND GTFO.
Everything was owned by the tribe, and certain people were given assignments.  That's the way toe world worked, and then the many-toothed monster known as capitalism came and assraped it.

yeah! lets become communists! after all we all know that native americans developed so much science and culture and had superior living standards... oh wait.

So the best way to cure a mind virus is to ignore it?

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-04 20:17

Maybe it is, if that kind of mind virus goes stronger each time you try to shake it out.  You can't force people to think for themselve.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-04 21:17

The number of Mormons is growing, and plenty of people ignore them.  They have missionaries that preach to other countries, converting other populations that would otherwise be unexposed.

First of all, I never said we should turn communist, I am against that idea. I merely stated that a form of communism has succeeded before since many argue it can never work.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-05 3:10

communism should be chosen by the people. the idea is that the population WANTS communism. by that time, notions of one-upping and ladder climbing will be considered unnecessary. only when a population goes into communism, knowing everyone works for the greater good and not for ones own self, will it ever work. so far, not so good, but we're getting there.

usually the path is capitalism > socialism > communism. if you skipa step, shit usually goes wrong.

Name: Anonymous 2006-09-05 3:55

You mean until human nature stops.

Name: Xel 2006-09-05 9:27

Has any statist, oppressive governments ever attained control incrementally? Isn't communism and the New Deal, all that generally nasty of various degrees, been a response to desperate situations? Many muslim militias are fighting bad governments, and some communist uprisings have been trying to protect the general populace from imperfect and unfair implementations of capitalism. Not defending government per se, just trying to understand if there are any slippery slopes.
