As individuals, the soldiers fight because it's their job, no questions asked. As a group, they fight to further the monetary gain of a handful of individuals whose lowest priority is actually helping the soldiers themselves, both in an effort to remain alive, much less to further their well-being outside the military.
A democratic system has been established; they now have the freedom and a democratic system, and they have successfully used it, to elect terrorist groups like Hamas into widely accepted positions of power, as well as religious political parties whose main goal is to perpetuate strife in the Middle East that has existed since their earlier days as both warring Bedoin tribes and conflicting schools of Islamic teachings that have been around since the beginnings of Islam.
In the process of bringing democracy to the Middle East, no questions asked, via killing, bullets and bombs, successfully pissing off most of the Middle East, the United States has also managed to create an anti-West platform throughout the Middle East that has exploited by many, among them Al Qaeda, as well as the current leader or Iran, in their efforts for political gain.
Earlier administrations, both in the United States (during its efforts to combat Communism encroaching on the Middle East), as well as others such as Russia (or the Soviet Union) have provided and dispersed the weaponry to this area that has made them a capable enemy.
The Middle East has been a region of the world, whether due to it's peoples, or it's terrain, has been unconquerable since the days of the Roman Empire. It has been tested throughout the ages by many civilizations, with a similar result each time, both in earlier times, as well as modern times, which are much more representative of the kind of arms and logistics present today.

It is true that under current Afghan law this man 'could' be exectuted, but the reality is that this simply won't happen. The Afghan government is already trying to have the man declared insane so that he won't have to stand trial. Hamid Karzai himself (the Afghan president) told Condoleeza Rice that he is working as hard as possible to bring a peaceful solution to this situation. Most likely the man will just be exiled to Europe or something. Though I have to admit that this scandal to uncover how badly fucked up Afghanistan's society still is.
