Most humans appeal to the same moral code they did since the beginning of written history. We know this because archaeologists can dig up copies of Zoroastrian texts and Babylonian tablets and read that they have all the same nonsense about eye-for-an-eye and no-sex-before-marriage that our "modern" moral codes do.

Believe it or not, I started thinking about that myself just after I wrote that. AIDS is considered a horrible disease, yet if it sprung up in a nation peopled by Puritans, like the ones who "evaded religious persecution" in England by settling in America (while really they just wanted the freedom to be the persecutors), AIDS would be a fairly complete non-issue. I mean, it'd kill _maybe_ a dozen people or so, and then die with the last of 'em. Right?
My main moral objection to the no-sex-before-marriage rule is that historically it has tended to be interpreted as applying much more strictly to women than men, creating an unfair virgin/whore dichotomy which I think had a lot to do with the disenfranchisement of women throughout most of human history. If it was universal and fair it would bother me a lot less.

moral judgement is a means by which biological and cultural systems increase their chances of reproducation. Anything that decreases the system's chances of survival is bad/evil, everything that supports it is good.
