The reason why Venezuela and other Latin American countries are moving towards the left is because they've been on the receiving end of US "foreign policy" for decades. This foreign policy often results in cataclysmic body counts, social inequality and enduring instability while piling up profits for US corporations.
Also, Western media's coverage of Chavez is deliberately taken out of context. This BBC article's first few paragraphs give the impression that the guy is a total nut. I mean, who goes around accusing world leaders of being Hitler, right? You'd have to read towards the bottom end of the article to find out that his comments were in response to Donald Rumsfeld, who made the Hitler comment first.
