Listing to metal doesn't make you manly/cool/hardcore/whatever stupid adjective you use to make excuses for wearing a lip ring. It makes you look childish and shows your poor taste in music.

Thus far, every argument in here has been essentially:
Metal rulz! You pussies/homos/faggots need to get some balwls!
or
Metal sucks... it's all screaming and stupid and.. stuff.
Well I have news for damn near everyone in this thread. You all fail at musical taste. Metal isn't inherently bad or good. Every genre has it's bad seeds and good ones. Except for crappy subgenres that are based on being watered down versions of passed bands. IE: Metal/Grindcore, Pop Punk, Emo, Modern Country. But if you're really all so closed minded that you have a single genre that you worship and that you believe that metal is THE genre with technical skill, then you need to go do some research. Crawl out of your prewritten, cliched, stereotypical worlds and look around for a moment.

I'm stunned at the shocking similarities between /mu/ and /music/
like any genre of music there are the real, true to the scene bands, and the greedy, corporate fueled bands that give the rest a poor image.
any half retarded nigger could see that.

I've never understood why people dismiss Metal as "childish". Music is recreational anyway, so why must one be so "mature" and "serious" about it.
I myself enjoy listening to 80s New Wave, bands like B-52s, Devo, Talking Heads, etc. They're fun, playful and childish as hell and cheer me up when I'm feeling down. Is that really any reason to question my maturity?

lololol, Metal doesn't get you laid.
Maybe you're too fucking retarded to ever hear of a little band called MOTLEY FUCKING CRUE?
Dudes got laid ALL THE FUCKING TIME and they played sleaze/hair metal. Even if you don't like it, it's still fucking metal, and those dudes got laid left and fucking right.
They also did exorbitant amounts of drugs.
As for the genre on the whole, metal is probably my favorite genre, but not by any long shot. I listen to as many genres as I can, with the exception of a very few. That also includes a few varieties of metal I don't find appealing. Other people do, and that's great. They can like what they like, I like what I like.
I listen to mostly power, thrash, hair/sleaze, black, and anything the metal the older stuff that was around before those genres really became prevalent, like Black Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, whatever. Metal is metal, end of story. Personally, I'm not big on the screaming shit, but that's just me. I prefer more instrumentality, or actual singing.
Also, Metallica are angsty wankers now. They need to go back to Master of Puppets or just stop making music.
And Slipknot needs to cut out like half their band. Motherfucker playing bongos in a metal song, lolololololol.
Also, I find it kind of sad that one of my favorite metal bands isn't even an actual fucking band-- Deathklok. Brendon Small is a genuis, and his stuff is actually really solid.. It's also hilarious.
Moar bands like that, please.

typical metal head who claims to have an eclectic taste in music
but it is the fact that "metal" we are used to call are exactly different things. probably you are blaming shitty bands and their shits.
a song contains metal objects or sounds metal. that's all. you can play all the notes and chords on piano or violin. so you can't blame bad usage of guitar tones or distortion. sadly you are right that there are million failure metal band like what is same with jazz bands.
1: Dragonforce in sub-par metal.
2: Evanescence is not metal.
3: Older metal (Anthrax, Iron Maidan, Metallica, Megadeth, etc) is good but showed up by modern metal bands.
4: Metalheads listen to good music because they appreciate talent. EXAMPLE: People love things to be extreme. What is more extreme than singing? shouting. what is more extreme than shouting? screaming. Whats better than a superficial pop song? A song with emotion and meaning.(This rules out pop, country, and rap)
(THIS IS A PERSONAL OPINION! NO WAY AM I TRYING TO BE BIAS!)

I don't bash on anybody's thoughts, but I don't expect anyone to respect each other's thoughts. There is one simple fact however, Metal fucking owns over all other genres of music. I mean most of my favorite bands aren't even considered metal. My favorite music is reggae. I even love electronica. The funny thing about this thread though is that it was probably started by some loud mouth punk that got his ass kicked one too many times in high school by the actual cool kids in school who just happen to be the metalhead druggies. Peace out ya bitch ass, go eat a bag of dicks.

Metal is an art form which has similarities to rock and roll, with the exception of greater complexity, darker subjects, and the vocals are usually part of (if not entirely) the bass line. Metal is judged by its fans on complexity of guitar and drum lines, vocal range, volume, and artistic style. It is viewed by fans as the art form best designed to excise emotion, specifically anger and depression.
Fans of other genres criticize the extreme distortion of instruments, dark themes, seemingly unintelligent fans, and especially the non-singing vocals. Many say that the screaming and/or grunting in metal music is not a legitimate vocal form.

I think people get to wrapped up in the vocals of music, to most Metalheads the vocals are just another instrument in the music. With metal it's about all the instruments working together in the most skillful way.
Metal has a huge range of styles and themes, and i don't particularly like all of them but that's just my opinion. I just hate it when people get wrapped up in sterotypes about vocals, they don't appriciate technical skill.
I'm a Bassist and Guitarist in a metal band myself and what i've come to realise is how amazingly talented these people are.
It's relatively easy to write a blues, indie or even jazz song in rather short order but metal songs are far more complex and require much more technical playing skill to both write and play well.
