I'm trying to figure out how. Apparently it's illegal to walk on the side of highways and all the country side has "no trespassing" signs. America is such a free country.

Unlike most European countries, the US is more spaced out and the cities aren't as condensed, especially true with Los Angeles and most Californian cities in general. And if you live in a city where public transport isn't sufficiently subsidized and planned out, you're fucked.
Cities on the east coast aren't as bad, but that's probably because most of those cities retain most of their European-style infrastructure planning, especially in the historic districts.

Friend of mine walked from New Mexico to CA... almost died... also people who are just walking, or who are traveling in a low-tech kind of way, are looked at very suspiciously, and, as mentioned above, hassled by cops.

Greyhound might work. I can't vouch for it though, since I've never been on one.

That's true. Especially since many cities, towns, and municipalities are hurting for cash, and the police forces have been really hounding for money with tickets and such.

To me, it's worth a try anyway; I used to be pretty ignorant too, but then I learned.

Maybe if you wear a T-shirt that says, Walk USA for Autism or something like that. Anyone who stops you, you ask for money for the cause.
