no trespassing is for private property next to the sidewalks, not the sidewalks themselves. sidewalks are a public place

Unlike most European countries, the US is more spaced out and the cities aren't as condensed, especially true with Los Angeles and most Californian cities in general. And if you live in a city where public transport isn't sufficiently subsidized and planned out, you're fucked.

Cities on the east coast aren't as bad, but that's probably because most of those cities retain most of their European-style infrastructure planning, especially in the historic districts.
