i think that the world we live in resembles the book 1984 in many ways

Name: Anonymous 2010-07-30 17:45

I would agree, but also add that it resembles Aldous Huxley's Brave New World in some ways as well. Both are highly recommended reads.

Drug use, (cannabis use, underground market for prescription pills, etc.) recreational sex (promoted even from early childhood, sexualization of children, etc.), contraceptives (condoms, birth control pills, the sexual revolution of the 1960s, etc.). Banal consumerism (don't fix anything, replace, BUY, BUY, BUY!), spending time alone is considered strange or out of the ordinary ("clubbing", drinking with people, etc.). Not that this stuff didn't exist during Aldous Huxley's time, but it certainty is pushed today (through media and such) as the "norm".

This is all in chapters 1–6 in the book. Did you ever read it? I agree that the world is not 100% just like Brave New World, but to say that elements within the book are not present in modern society is foolhardy.

You are very asinine and shallow to have "thought" such a thing.
You are very asinine to think that it's not. Read above.

Rude! Perhaps you should follow your own advice and lead by example?

Very rude. Why don't you head on back to /b/ where your rudeness and belligerency is most welcomed?

>>6
Agreed.

Very, very rude. Just take a good look at yourself.

We've been over this before.

The world is not like 1984 at all. Only retarded teenagers who feel "oppressed" for having to go school would think something like that. There's a good reason why only children listen to Rage Against the Machine, you know.

Huxley's vision of the future is far more accurate. People rotting in their own empty happiness? Sound familiar to me.

Why, there's even an image that someone made about this issue - that Orwell believed that "the things we hate will destroy us," and Huxley believed that "the things we love will destroy us." The only slightly applicable thing from 1984 in our time was the "Two Minutes Hate," where people are distracted from how shitty their lives are by being made to hate something. In our case, people are made to hate each other (left-wing versus right-wing) for no good reason, in order to distract them from just how boring their lives are. Ever wonder why people who actually give shit about politics are so unlikeable? They don't have anything else in their lives.

Patriot Act, warrantless wiretapping, CCTV cameras, license plate traffic cameras, huge national databases, Social Security numbers, CIA, FBI, MI6, and whatever three letter acronym used for similar government agencies. I could go on, and on.

I will agree that the world is heading more so in the direction of Brave New World rather than 1984.

Name: Anonymous 2010-08-02 20:04

We're heading for hyper-inflation. Think Weimar Republic. At that point will be the rise of the FIFTH REICH...

Name: Anonymous 2010-08-02 20:23

Once again, Americans think America=the whole world.

Name: Anonymous 2010-08-02 21:32

As America goes, so goes the rest of the world.
If something catastrophic happens in America, economically or otherwise, the rest of the world will be changed.

Not so much with Mexico, Chad, New Zealand and I could go on with the other 97% perscent of countries in the world that really don't make a big difference in the world.

Sounds a little arrogant maybe, but it's true.

No you're wrong and asinine. Once the debt bubble burst all the world's people will lose their luxuries and return to dark struggles where only the iron fist will silence them. The world is more like 1984 because it is fantasy to think we can maintain this level of comfort and distraction. Typical shallow teenager.

Perhaps in the future this will happen, but right now it's much more looking like Brave New World.

Typical shallow teenager.

Brave new world most certainly.  We're amusing ourselves yet nothing we do in this world really matters.  The whole system is geared to the bizaare Hakuna Matata recreational drug and entertainment indusries with rampant pointless consumerism thrown in.  I don't think we're even really living a life so much as marking time before we croak.  Just like BNW.  1984 in a lot of ways is less scary -- they were open about the position of humans in the system -- Obey or BB will get you.  OUr system makes us a buying machine and a childlike entertainment user, and simply kills our spirit.

Political correctness can be argued to be a form of newspeak. Same thing with changing the words of things and their meaning. "Landfill" for dump, "wetlands" for swamps, as two examples.

I don't know what that has to do with a thread topic discussing the modern world as being akin to the plots of 1984 and Brave New World. But why? Why do you want to commit suicide live in front of strangers? Your life cannot be that bad.
