Swine Flu Conspiracy

Anyone feel that the media has blown this way out of proportion so that we'll all pay for flu shots and net the drug company lots of $$$ ?

Are the vaccinations even ready?  I heard they still had to test them

Of course its blown out of proportion, its just the flu, a strain that you will get if exposed to it, but its still just the flu, we dont live in 1880 anymore.

Strange. I didn't even notice that! I guess I kind of feel that way too, because my house was built in 1889 and while modernized here and there (broadband Internet access, digital TV cable, complete lead removal from old pipes, new furnace installed in the 90s, ect.) it still retains most of its older material like lath and plaster walls.

Except for the kitchen and bathroom which has crappy cheaply made drywall (Yuck! And searching through Google found that some people still make walls with lath and plaster even today, though no where near as common as it was in the 1880s).

You know, I'm not sure. It may have been removed. Would it be connected to the chimney? Because my chimney runs all the way down to the stove in my kitchen. It could have been removed when my Dad remodeled the kitchen and bathroom and removed the old lath and plaster walls (and those were covered up with roof shingles from the previous owners, I forgot to mention that detail in my earlier post). I'll have to ask him when he gets back from work.

Also, on the topic of a cold house, the living room appears to get quite cold in the winter and it takes a while for heat to flow to that room for some reason.

They generally have their own chimney pipe, which can connect to the chimney or just directly outside.  Usually the stove's in a spot where the house will get the optimum heat, such as the center of a large open room.

Well, I asked him and apparently it must have been the previous owners that removed it, probably sometime in the 50s. He doesn't know any details of it beyond that.

There also doesn't appear to be any evidence of a "separate chimney" anywhere, so I'm guessing it was connected to the main and only chimney. As for the heat it's being pumped through the house with a modern heating system that was installed sometime in 1995 that replaced an earlier, cast iron coal-powered mammoth size of a beast that possibly was the original furnace. The heating ducts also had to be replaced and modernized which was a big project but well worth it in the end.

Oh and I found out a while back that the house is "Dutch Colonial" style, and was probably a farm house when first constructed.

The government says the vaccinations are necessary in case the virus (H1N1) mutates into something more sinister.
