People having kids now suck at parenting...

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-21 18:31

I know a couple sets of parents who both have 4-year old boys.
They are extremely small for their size because they eat whatever they want.

I was on a week-long vacation and this kid ate a piece of bread with cheese sprinkled on it for lunch.
Same thing for dinner. No breakfast.

No push to eat meat or vegetables from the parents.
The night we ordered pizza the kids at the cheese off of the pizza.
I just don't understand. These kids OWN the parents. They do and eat whatever the fuck they want.

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers." -Socrates

Great Post.  As a token of respect I offer this fascinating article from google answers about the disputed attribution.  It has good citations, but I didn't check them.

I blame liberalism, mostly. Modern liberalism that is. Sorry folks, but kids need a good spanking now and then. I was spanked when I was little upon doing something wrong, though I wasn't just spanked, I was later explained to as why what I did was wrong. Of course I was still a little misbehaved shit until my teenage years, then I leveled out a bit, and I'm pretty mellow and level headed now in my early 20s.

Seriously, parents need to stop being a bunch of pansies and smack their kids. But of course, you get some of those whackjob "parents" that throw their kids in the oven and burn them alive. What people don't understand is, there is a fine line between discipline and abuse. Smacking your kid(s) bottom(s) a couple of times is not child abuse. Thank you.

OK Spanky!  Let's all smack around our kids.  They need to learn that violence should be called upon frequently when interacting with other people.

Wow. Way to completely miss the point and take what I said out of context.

So 4chan,
Have you heard about the latest dance craze?

I didn't miss shit, Spanky.  Fine line my ass.  And as far as "modern liberalism" is concerned, you're way off base.

No I'm not. You're a moron if you think that a parent spanking their kid(s) because he or she did wrong is child abuse. Being equal to that of placing them in a tub of scalding boiling hot water, or cooking them in the oven. My god, you're either dense or a troll. A smack on the bum or two and having them have a hurt bum for a half hour (if even that) is not the same as them receiving permanent bodily damage because their parents are psychotic nutcases.

Did you even read the part where I said that after I was spanked as a child, my parents would later come back after I had calmed down, and explained the reason why they did what they did to me? No, of course not.

Stop living in a fantasy land where all kids behave as they should and don't need at least a minimum amount of discipline when applicable and necessary. I'm not suggest going Marine Corps hardcore on them, Jesus Christ. It's part of being a parent, and it doesn't make you into some kind of monster because you gave your kid a few light smacks on the bum.

I read your post the way I read everything, carefully.  And no one believes that the acts of violence you contrasted are the same in any way except that they are violence committed against a helpless victim.  I'm not saying the use of what we may characterize as mild corporal punishment is monstrous.  Simply that it is unnecessary, and confusing.  Are you telling me that you can't outsmart a child? Children must be taught about force and violence, and trained in its ways. Rule number one is force and violence may only be used in kind.
And that ain't got a god damned thing to do with "modern liberalism." Liberals, as usual, have only a piece of the puzzle, violence is bad, and as usual go too far with it.

Wow, so liberalism is the cause of unruly children in modern times but not ancient times?

Just another fucking kid trying to blame everything on a political idea he doesn't agree with.

OK. Well I wouldn't go immediately to spanking just because the child is simply not listening. And I believe that spanking should only be used as a last resort. However, not spanking children no matter what is a foolish rule to follow.

Children generally have a natural knack to explore boundaries. If they cross boundaries, and there is no repercussions for such, they're going to develop the thought that they can do as they damn well please. This goes back to OP's anecdote wherein the children have developed the idea that they are in charge, and the parents are nothing more than dumb giants that hold no authority over them.

In the case of OP, I would attempt to reverse this trend by keep the kid in a corner. Sort of like a "time out" if you will. If the child still continues to walk out of the corner, I would continually place him or her back in, until they receive the idea that the parent, not them is in control.

Spanking being used as a last measure of course. Spanking being used sparingly in the proper situations, however, doesn't cause any harm though.

No. But it does promote the idea that it is natural they act this way because they're kids, and they don't need to be corrected at all. Just live and let be, they'll grow up to be fine. Sorry, but reality does not work like that.

Any man who does not know that there are exceptions to every rule is a fool.
The job of a parent is to push it's child into boundaries again and again until they fully understand the consequences.  I am suspicious of these boundaries you say seem to exist without ready consequences or repercussions.
"Time outs" are an example of force, and appropriate.
Violence should be used as a last measure once, and at the appropriate time, for it can only teach one lesson.  That no matter what, violence may come at any time.
Force is how we navigate this physical world.  Violence is how we destroy a part of it.  Homo Sapiens  Sapiens do not destroy unless faced with destruction.

I wouldn't be a good parent because I don't have the stamina necessary to beat them effectively.

Name: Anonymous 2009-08-22 4:45

Spanking kids just shows them at an early age that violence is the answer. If you have an argument with a grown man, you dont spank him to win the argument because you are stronger than him do you?

No, but I sometimes do that with the missus

I think kids, even at a young age, see their relationship with their parents as different from those with other people.  If their parent were to get into an argument with someone and use violence, then it would probably teach them that violence is the answer.

I am a fully grown man (400 lbs) and I get spanked regularly.

My hubby spanks me whenever I've been bad.  I deserve it, I'm a very naughty girl.

You don't spank them when they want to argue with you, you spank them when they piss on the floor.
oh yeah and ancient greece and rome was in an entirely different moral and political timeline than the christian european one we are in today, those people had sex with kids for gods sake.

People have been having sex with kids since the dawn of time. We are not superior just because we've been conditioned to revile that practice.
