Actually the U.S. government first got the ball rolling, but Europe did invent the WWW, and Finland invented IRC. As a U.S. citizen, I am proud of Europe for inventing such things. And we shouldn't be having U.S. vs. Europe arguments, they're dull and irrelevant. The Internet is a global place, and I am glad to be able to converse with people not only across county and state lines in the U.S., but also across different continents. Truly mans greatest invention. Thank you.

No, it was a Finnish man who invented it, Jarkko Oikarinen while he was working at the University of Oulu in August, 1988.

Although, IRC was very helpful during the media blackout while the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt that was taking place. So Russians did benefit from IRC.

Finland has been an independent nation since December 6^th, 1917. Oulu, Finland wasn't part of the Soviet Union and it certainly wasn't a part of it in August, 1988. If the university where IRC was bring developed was located in Karelia then I could see that argument maybe holding some water. The Soviets tried many times to subvert Finland's sovereignty, and government, yet failed each and every time. Not to mention their comical attempt during World War II to destroy Helsinki by bombing it at nighttime.

Sorry Russians, you bring us many interesting things to the Internet world (which we deeply appreciate), but IRC is not one of them. Although we do appreciate the 1991 logs, they are interesting to read.
