So many negative things have happened with the Bush Administration (the war, his cowboy politics, etc)... and then of course the whole obesity thing -- we're the fattest country on the planet. I mean you could trace some pretty fucked up shit that America has done back to the atomic bomb and slavery.
Anyway, whenever I visit another country and see how they perceive the US... I can't help but feel somewhat ashamed/embarrassed. I mean of course in reality it'd be foolish to accept responsibility for any of those things, personally (I'm not a lazy, fast-food junkie; I didn't vote for Dubya, etc), but it still makes me uneasy about the whole idea of being an American. Sometimes it's like I just wanna' get the fuck out of here.
I want to know if any Americans here share the same sentiment.

It's deeper. The problem is Americanism.
Look at the so-called American Dream. Although its meaning is obviously contested, we're probably on safer ground when we discuss what that dream is not about. It's not about being the best person that you can be, or about trying to help the worst off, or about any kind of self-sacrifice or authentic communitarian spirit. Generally, it's about individual prosperity. It's about accumulating as much material wealth as possible.
