#3, use that blog semi-html crap that seems to be used a lot.  Put the items to be changed between HTML using brackets ("[" and "]") instead of less-than and greater-than signs ("<" and ">").  I've used "i" and "b" on 4chan (for italics and bold).

Let's see if this works, since I don't know to escape things yet.  This:

... becomes this:

... once you change the periods for the i character.
