The annoying thing about proxies

Name: Fish 2006-05-09 12:18

The annoying thing about proxies is that idiots who like to spam and get themselves banned use them, then when they get banned they just use another proxy. In the mean time, people using the proxied IP end up getting banned instead. So people are free to spam and post crap, with the added bonus of getting other people banned.

Lovely...

On the upside, despite having been banned due to the above, I can always just proxy and use the boards anyway :/ Makes you wonder what the point of using the ban button is.

You'd think by now they would have invented a better way to track computers. Why not just make internet providers give each comp a unique number when they send them the service. Like sort of a customer number. That's what I thought an IP address was. Like with cable for instance they can cut it off if you don't pay your bills, so they have to know which is your house and your line. Same with a phone line. If that information is stored why not just give it a number or code?

Any techies wanna fill me in why this doesn't happen? mayb its cause ur smarter than me and im dum

Numbers are finite?

Your house line never changes, does it? So why not just use that as a number because the ISP has to send it to that address. It starts there, wherever it goes after shouldn't matter. When you connect you should get a number and keep it as long as you use the service.

Random idea off the top of my head: something like [country code]##.[provider code]####.[service area]####.[physical location]####.[customer number]#####
So I could be A2.SC45.B102.4800.00560
Canada, Shaw Cable, city name code, house line number, customer number. They can already identify me by my billing number and stuff for cable TV and the net.

But that's just idealism talking.
