Posting by name/login only

Name: Larz 2005-01-24 13:50

Seeing that the state of this BBS is in fairly good shape, and fairly free banal postings on most of the boards, I was hoping this suggestion would keep it that way.

Basically, I was proposing to have a posting by name only system, mainly to stop the infantile and pathetic postings that have appeared on 4chan over the course of its lifespan, which have reduced it to the mess it is now.

This would work on a number of levels:

1: Obscene and general nusance posters could be banned more easily, cutting down on the 're-offending' rate.

2: 'Anonymous' posters would have their pointless drivel removed, inmproving the quality of the board as a whole.

and 3: Creating a nicer BBS, which would hopefully extent its lifespan.

Because personally, I think expanding the subject matter on the boards can only be a good thing (within reason).

Granted, even with a login, no BBS is going to be totally 'crap free'.  But this is my attempt to hopefully improve the BBS which I think has most promise at the moment.

Tell me what you think..?  Constructive critisism only please.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-25 4:46 (sage)

Go shii go!

Name: Larz 2005-01-25 9:57

Here ya go -

"Registration keeps out good posters" - I understand the reasoning behind this, and alot of it I agree with, but also, a lot of people are put off by the mindless dross as well.  I'd like to give more well-rounded responce and critical answers to postings, but why should I bother when I'm going to get a responce along the lines of a one word 'shit' or 'anonymous rules the internet okay'.  Most people are looking for witty, intellegent chat, not mindless dross.

"Registration lets in bad posters" - I am not trying to tell you your job, but isn't the point of an Administrator, to edit the boards to stop over zealous posters that want to leave 80% of the messages.  The boards are meant to be for everyone, this completely defeats the point, if theyre aren't limits put in place.  Because without limits, you have anarchy (4chan?)

"Registration attracts trolls" - Unfortunally I can't argue with this really, because if someone is intent on destroying a board, they will.  Irrelevant of whether or not the BBS has a login, I would just hope people had more class and not do it.

"Anonymity is a virtue" - No its not.  Its an excuse to write any old crap you want because you know know one will know who wrote it.  If you genuinely have something worth saying, you wont mind having your name to it.  Because the names on here are only pseudonyms anyway, so only people with access to your ip address will know who you really are.

"Anonymity counters vanity" - You can be just as vain with words you use, with or without a name ie 'I think I am the best looking person in the world, because I have good hair'.  The only difference is, people will just see you for what you really a are, a shallow person.

"Most old-type software, such as vBulletin and Invision, costs money to use" - No problems there, your trying to run a BBS on the 'peanuts' people donate.  Maybe if more people donated, they'd be more interested in what people post (keeping the drivel from the pages).

I'm am guessing your still going to ban me though, even though I was actually trying to improve the BBS for everyone.

banning Larz would be an injustice. He's only offering a freaking suggestion, heh. I say GO LARZ GO!

There's an infinite number of vB and phpBB boards out there. Stop being a dickhead here because you can't agree with us.

As someone who has seen the SA forums rise and fall since mid-2000, I can tell you that a registration-only board is no better. Look at the so-called "witty, intelligent chat" there that is now little more than bland, predictable humor by a bunch of juvenile elitists. Anonymous BBS systems prevent the community from degenerating into a circle-jerking popularity contest. Being verbose and grammatically correct in your posts doesn't instantly make them better.

Besides, I'm sure that a text-only BBS results in a minimal bandwidth fee.

Name: Larz 2005-01-25 14:14

>>15

Being called a dickhead aside, I wasn't looking for people to only agree with me (it would get boring then), all I was looking for was more responces like yours ie you've thought about what your going to say, before you've actually typed it, instead of some 'off the kuff' remark that doesn't do either party any favours.

"Anonymous BBS systems prevent the community from degenerating into a circle-jerking popularity contest" - I know what your saying, and I don't like that rubbish either, but we need some better system to check the boards.  I am not saying Shii etc aren't trying their best, but maybe its too much for them to do by themselves.  Maybe better enforcement of the 'Stick to the topic' rule would be better, with having unrelated posts removed..?

By 'shooting the messenger' aka banning me, it isn't really improving the BBS now is it, its just getting personal for no reason.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-25 15:59

The only banning threat I saw was for not responding to the article in the time limit, which you have done as required, not for your opinions. Doesn't strike me as all THAT personal.

'Sticking to the topic'(which seems to be a nonexistent "rule" from a quick check of the world4ch guide on the front page. Please don't quote rules you made up as reference) is best left to the posters in a thread. If a topic is worth pursuing, users should not let themselves be led on a tangent. If it isn't, you might as well hope the derailment results in a cool multi-track drift.

To get back to your original suggestion, if the admins and the community as a whole thought that registration would be a better solution, they wouldn't have bothered with this style of internet forum. We've all seen the phpBBs and vbulletins of the world, with their registration date elitism, huge sigs, and postcount penis contests. Now we're trying something new, and to give up already on anonymous posting would be a waste.

From comments like this "stop over zealous posters that want to leave 80% of the messages" I get the idea that your main concern is over spamming, which is already against the rules and enforced as far as I've seen. If you mean the useless one-liners like "hahahaha" above, yes, they are annoying, but it does no good to anyone to dwell on them. Reply to the worthwhile posts and ignore the rest.

Please read the second Q&A of this interview to get a better idea of the kind of thinking that led to this openess to anonymity. http://ojr.org/japan/internet/1061505583.php
Anonymity is not an excuse to write any old crap. If it's crap, it'll be seen as crap and ignored or denounced as crap. If you genuinely have something worth saying, it'll be taken as such regardless of the name at the top.

Name: 2005-01-25 16:59 (capped)

Its an excuse to write any old crap you want because you know know one will know who wrote it.  If you genuinely have something worth saying, you wont mind having your name to it.

I was not aware of any web forum software existing today that requires people to attribute their real names to posts. but thanks for responding, I was only asking for a clarification to prove you weren't a troll

"Anonymity counters vanity" - You can be just as vain with words you use, with or without a name ie 'I think I am the best looking person in the world, because I have good hair'.  The only difference is, people will just see you for what you really a are, a shallow person.

Name: 2005-01-25 17:51 (capped)

Maybe better enforcement of the 'Stick to the topic' rule would be better, with having unrelated posts removed..?

"stay on-topic" is a fucking bullshit rule on any forum. When you're having a conversation with your friends, do you reprimand them or boot them out when they start to change subjects? If you still have something to say about the original topic, it's not like a tangent prevents you from saying it.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-25 20:02

There is such a prevolance of registration required forums for any topic under the sun now its just rediculous. Most forums get so few posts it really doesn't warrant a registration just to post something. Thats kind of the situation world4ch is in right now. Its slow, but its helpped by the fact that no one needs to register on it.

If I had to register for any of the shii based boards, I would probably shoot myself sooner than give out my email to these people. The balance of retarded discussions to on topic discussions is decent, especially considering the temptations of anonymity.

In summation... shii rocks.

It's interesting to see how differently one's posts are received when you take your name off them.  All the baggage you carry goes bye-bye, and the reader is left with only the words.

I've noticed the effect myself, and I'm one of the most obscure "regulars" around.
Anonymous posting IS 4chan.  I'd hate to see that go.

>When you're having a conversation with your friends, do you reprimand them or boot them out when they start to change subjects?

No, obviously not. Most people will say something like 'Your missing the point though' though, and reverts back to the original point.

the Internet is inherently an anonymous network so this is its nature. trying to restrict it with pseudonyms is folly.

Name: Soulwound !a8SG0gjxDg 2005-01-29 1:08 (sage)

Anonymous or not, make no difference!
Seriously, how is anyone going to really tell who I am by my handle? It's not like every person on the internet has a uniquely assigned identifier that would hold them accountable for anything they've ever done or posted on it.

We could all just change our names to "Nils" and would still be just as anonymous.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-29 2:33

>Your being monumentally naive or to turning a blind eye to the 'fact' that most people, given the chance through anonymity, will be pretty vicious in theyre comments because they are anonymous.
If you'd take the blinders off you'd see the "vicious" posts come from anons and usernames alike, as well as the useful posts, even in this thread.

The point is that using a communal name like anonymous prevents linking of multiple posts to one source, and thus building up a positive or negative reputation, which induces bias in the reader.

Take CyberAkuma. He has a catgirl obsession bordering on the farcical, and has been trolled and flamed for it(by anons and non-anons alike) heavily in the past, and still does sometimes. If he had made all those catgirl image posts as "anonymous", he'd be just another user who likes cute things. His username and tripcode now mark his posts as coming from "that wierdo with the fetish".

>In reply to the website listing, I understand alot of Mr Furkawa's is saying, but he is talking in a past-tense.
I don't understand what you mean by past tense. 2ch is quite active. But no, I'm not saying 4chan is in the same league. I'm trying to show you why the features being ripped off(like anon posting) are being ripped off, as well as the ideas that led to them.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-30 12:53

You are missing one of the most important point of Shii's argument:

People are lazy. Very few people will bother to register to post on (or read!) a message board they have never posted on before. The kind of people who WILL register are the kind of people whose lives revolve around posting on messageboards. So you attract the bores and scare away the interesting and sane people.

I may not be particularly interesting or sane, but I have been put off many a forum by some stupid mandatory registration system, particularly those that require you to join to even fucking read anything - generally I won't bother with the registration process (complete with pointless email validation! yeah) if I can't even see if the board is worth posting on.

Anyway, people like you are precisely the sort of people who would join, and to be quite honest that would suck balls.

well the whole point of why we are all here is to imitate japanese 2ch culture. So what would be the point if we were to completely change the system by removing anonymous and creating a new design?? The anonymous system is what everything revolves around. And if the design were to be changed any further it would just become another north american style message board.

ry) Also, by remaining anonymous you can say what you really want to say. You dont have to worry about saying anything dumb, or be afraid to say things which may be offensive but state the truth.
