Posting by name/login only

Name: Larz 2005-01-24 13:50

Seeing that the state of this BBS is in fairly good shape, and fairly free banal postings on most of the boards, I was hoping this suggestion would keep it that way.

Basically, I was proposing to have a posting by name only system, mainly to stop the infantile and pathetic postings that have appeared on 4chan over the course of its lifespan, which have reduced it to the mess it is now.

This would work on a number of levels:

1: Obscene and general nusance posters could be banned more easily, cutting down on the 're-offending' rate.

2: 'Anonymous' posters would have their pointless drivel removed, inmproving the quality of the board as a whole.

and 3: Creating a nicer BBS, which would hopefully extent its lifespan.

Because personally, I think expanding the subject matter on the boards can only be a good thing (within reason).

Granted, even with a login, no BBS is going to be totally 'crap free'.  But this is my attempt to hopefully improve the BBS which I think has most promise at the moment.

Tell me what you think..?  Constructive critisism only please.

The only banning threat I saw was for not responding to the article in the time limit, which you have done as required, not for your opinions. Doesn't strike me as all THAT personal.

'Sticking to the topic'(which seems to be a nonexistent "rule" from a quick check of the world4ch guide on the front page. Please don't quote rules you made up as reference) is best left to the posters in a thread. If a topic is worth pursuing, users should not let themselves be led on a tangent. If it isn't, you might as well hope the derailment results in a cool multi-track drift.

To get back to your original suggestion, if the admins and the community as a whole thought that registration would be a better solution, they wouldn't have bothered with this style of internet forum. We've all seen the phpBBs and vbulletins of the world, with their registration date elitism, huge sigs, and postcount penis contests. Now we're trying something new, and to give up already on anonymous posting would be a waste.

From comments like this "stop over zealous posters that want to leave 80% of the messages" I get the idea that your main concern is over spamming, which is already against the rules and enforced as far as I've seen. If you mean the useless one-liners like "hahahaha" above, yes, they are annoying, but it does no good to anyone to dwell on them. Reply to the worthwhile posts and ignore the rest.

Please read the second Q&A of this interview to get a better idea of the kind of thinking that led to this openess to anonymity. http://ojr.org/japan/internet/1061505583.php
Anonymity is not an excuse to write any old crap. If it's crap, it'll be seen as crap and ignored or denounced as crap. If you genuinely have something worth saying, it'll be taken as such regardless of the name at the top.
