If you want to talk about languages (programming also discussed) or the culture attached to them, join #/lang/ on irc.rizon.net. Its what /lang/ should've been but too derpy to have ACTUALLY been that way.

Oh u

Did you even visit the chatroom? Why do you think it's only Japanese? There have been people there from several countries, speaking several languages. I assume you're just trying to be a dick.

Anyway, the chat's a good way to get in contact with native speakers and fellow students of various langs (including programming languages, as OP mentions) and it doesn't have unhelpful dudes in it like >>11

Because World4ch is full of weeaboo faggots.
There have been people there from several countries, speaking several languages.
My point still stands. Just replace "Japanese" with whatever language you're trying to learn. The fact of the matter is that most cultures are xenophobic and not accepting of foreigners. Why waste time learning a language when the people who speak it will never really like or respect you? It's a waste of time.

Hah. Well, one can study languages simply because they enjoy linguistics--there doesn't need to be any intention to fit in or be accepted by native speakers. Hell, some people learn languages only because they want to read books in those languages, not because they want to talk to anyone. If you enjoy learning, I don't see how it's a waste of time.

As for your comment on xenophobia, the fact is that the world is full of 'foreigners' and constant communication between cultures. What's the use in being too afraid to learn something or go somewhere just because some people won't "like" you for it, if it's what you want to do? Plus, to be honest, I've generally encountered enthusiasm when learning from native speakers, and where I live and grew up is highly multilingual anyway. Not everyone learning a language is going to be a "foreigner" somewhere.
