I've never actually studied the language, just learned from speaking with relatives and such, but I think you're basically correct. "Je" and "bio" will look a bit different depending on the object it refers to.

Not 100% sure about the spelling. Also it may defer a bit between the languages (Croatian, Serbian, etc.)

Је био doesn't make much sense on its own. It needs context. For example:

"Он је био" would be "he was"

Third person singular - past tense of "to be"

Fucking neighboring languages. They sound close, but I still wouldn't ever realize that "је био" corresponds to "был" in Russian.

Father is Bosnian and mother is half-Croatian. I could speak it a lot better when I was a kid, though. I can still understand a lot but it's hard to find the words when I try to speak it.

What does it mean when -ov is used as a suffix on the end of a persons name?

eg John ---> Johnov

There's a shitload of these depending on gender of the possessed object and who the owner is (first, second or third person etc.)

I think these are called "aspirations" in a language. Correct me if I'm wrong. But how does one tell the difference between Ч and Ћ? They both make a "ch" sound, and yet they are different.

Yes, those are the equivalents, but, I've never seen tj used before. I think you might be referring to dj, which is ђ. In any case, that doesn't really answer my question.

In Serbian, Ч is a hard "ch" /tʃ/, while Ћ is palatal /tɕ/. At least that's what I've just read in Wikipedia.

Different words use different characters.

Sack (bag) = Џак
Student (pupil) = Ђак ; Also check post #18...  Though they aren't a speaker, they raise a valid point.  If you can't tell the difference, get your hearing checked, I guess.

In Serbian Cyrillic it's "енглески".

Here is a breakdown for you. Thank god the language the language is phonetic, so this is really to see.

I = И

I don't know why some of you had the "х" in the translations. That "h"/"x" is the kind in the English word "haha". If you wanted to say "sh" use "ш".

Cyrillic is much easier for me. Also, the latin is mostly used when the character encoding doesn't support Cyrillic. Most signs you see in the Balkans will be in Cyrillic.
