Self-Study of Languages

Name: Anonymous 2009-01-05 23:41

(copypasta from /r9k/)
I was inspired by the last thread so I've started my New Year's Resolution early and started learnan French. I know a couple of you want to learn/brush up on French as well (and other languages) so I'm going to share what I'm using. Since I can't have true immersion, am immersing myself in the language as much as I can.

Why French? Why not? Lots of materials available on the internets, it's spoken in many places around the world outside of France, there is a lot of great French music (inb4 MC Solaar) and a thriving film industry in France... and French women do their laundry in the nude. Pic related.

I think French would be a great language to build some confidence and springboard me into other languages.

some fat bitch stole an mc solaar cd from me in high school i'm still mad about that

Thanks for this. I was actually going to buy a French textbook but this one is quite good.

Motivation is worth so much when it comes to learning languages I would suggest just learning the language you're interested in. If that happens to be French, good, otherwise switch right now. For example as a French speaker I could have learned Spanish since it's very similar to French but I just have no reason to do so.

I haven't listened to French music or French movies in a long time, doho. I like our news (Radio-Canada or CBC news) and the French news the most though.

Fuer deine Entschuldigung gibt es keinen Grund, es gibt tatsaechlich Leute, die es zu schaetzen wissen, wenn man Interesse an ihrer Kultur zeigt.

If you have any DVD's dubbed in multiple languages, try those, especially if it includes subs in that language as well.

I taught myself Japanese. Well my speaking ability is pretty poor obviously (somewhere between JLPT3 and 2 I would say really) but learning Vocabulary, Kanji and also Grammar is just a matter of learning and memorizing anyway so you can very well do that on your own. But make no mistake about it, it will take you years of daily studying before you can even attempt to read a fucking manga for 6 year olds, let alone seinen etc. material.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-18 13:04

People say that all the time, and I know they're just exaggerating, but if you genuinely studied every day you would have to be pretty fucking stupid for it to take years before you could read a kid's manga.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-18 14:54

that's why I said seinen, look it up, stupid.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-18 19:09

yeah and that's true. sorry but text book japanese has nothing to do with the fucked up slang in fucking manga for 6 year olds. I won't respect you unless you are at least JLPT1 so just believe my words.

Thanks to /r9k/ being down, I rediscovered the text boards. This is a great thread, thanks for posting.

YOU SAID PIC RELATED

I want to see a nude French chick doing the laundry.

Name: Anonymous 2009-10-07 12:06

I wish I had time to continue by Deutsch lernen, but I feel like I must devote my "study time" to uni now. I was having a lot of fun with it in summer though.

Michel Thomas and Pimsleur language tapes have taught me much more than I ever learned at school, trying to memorise verb tables and vocab lists.

Name: Anonymous 2012-08-24 20:32

OP here, I'm amazed this thread is still around.

Anyway, I'm going to also suggest Michel Thomas' audio course and if you're learning Greek, try the Language Transfer project (free): http://www.languagetransfer.org/index.html

Some other free resources which have been developed since I made the thread...

Duolingo (only a few languages right now): http://duolingo.com/
