I'm an expert in most Germanic languages, mainly: German, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Icelandic, Faroese and English. I also know some Frysian, Old English, Frankish, Old Norse and have a deep etimologic knowledge.

In this thread you can ask any questions about Germanic languages and I'll answer them.

why does your discipline down play the celtic influence on english? i don't understand how three hundred year old political concerns are still of importance now.

Celtic languages aren't Germanic.

for being an english expert, your ability to comprehend a simple english sentence isn't very good.

Name: Anonymous 2008-05-17 8:16

I could say the same about you. First post states: GERMANIC language expert.

Can you read it? Is your brain capable of processing this information? Even though English is heavily influenced by French for example, French isn't a Germanic language, and therefore, doesn't belong in this thread. Same goes for Celtic languages.
And now to be blunt: nobody cares about your shepherd failed languages.

Is English really a germanic language? Most of its words come from latin.

30% can't possibly be called "most".

30% + 20% from french, which is a latin language

Name: Anonymous 2008-05-17 12:15

It may have had a large influence from scandinavian and french [citation needed] due to us being invaded, but it is still a Germanic language.

anglo-americans are now officially latino scum

where does the word "germanic" come from? I thought it came from spearmen (ger=spear iirc), but apparantly this is not correct?

Name: Anonymous 2008-05-21 13:58

>>16
It comes from Latin, "Germanus". Germanus combines two roots: "germen" and "anus". It literally means "the source of the butthole (anus)".

Name: Anonymous 2008-05-23 18:04

>>17
No, you're right about it stemming from germanus, which is the combination of two roots, however those roots are "germ" and "anus". It literally means the butthole of a microbial organism.

This clearly differentiates tribal society which buttsexed and which didn't.

I don't think you know Faroese, OP.

I don't think you know English, OP.

*knowledge of etymology.
*Frisian.

You can't add those percentages like that. Most of the words borrowed from Latin came *through* French.

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-03 9:39

Yes I can, faggot.

A computerised survey of about 80,000 words in the old Shorter Oxford Dictionary (3rd ed.) was published in Ordered Profusion by Thomas Finkenstaedt and Dieter Wolff (1973)[38] that estimated the origin of English words as follows:

    * Langue d'oïl, including French and Old Norman: 28.3%
    * Latin, including modern scientific and technical Latin: 28.24%
    * Other Germanic languages (including words directly inherited from Old English): 25%
    * Greek: 5.32%
    * No etymology given: 4.03%
    * Derived from proper names: 3.28%
    * All other languages contributed less than 1%

French and Latin only gave English a much richer vocabulary. The bare bones of English is still almost entirely of germanic origin. Numbers, days of the week, parts of the body, etc. etc. All german

Borrowing words doesn't change the origin and structure of a language. Ottoman Turkish had far more Arabic/Persian words than Turkic ones, but still it was an Altaic language, not a Semitic/Indo-European.

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-05 10:46

German: Arsch = Ass; ficken = to Fuck ; scheißen = to shit

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-05 18:12

you're doing it wrong. That wasn't the point.

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-07 14:31

>>30
But, as you can plainly see, the most important words are still of a Germanic background.
