World language?

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-26 16:47 ID:MeUsbmzs

Well Ive been wondering; what would be the effect of a world language (Also Im doing a study about the affect a world language would have). It would replace ordinary second language in schools untill all educated people could read and write in it. What are your views?

Lots of people who work with translating and interpreting would lose their jobs.

Considering the size of the world you would end up with dialects so different they would baiscally turn into new languages. This is already the case in many nations, personally I sometimes have trouble understanding people from the other side of my country, and I live in a small country.

Having the language regulated would probably help.

British English is what's being taught around the world, but it often becomes unintelligible because of the lack of education and practical use for a lot of people.

Having a more widely used world language might fix that.

I propose Ithkuil.

There was a world language which has been created and called esperanto. It was a flop.

There are good sides for a world language, but that would be really difficult to achieve. Language is an important part in every nation's traditions and I'm sure no nation will be ready to lose their traditions.

There are already three world languages.
Money.  Math.  Music.

Maybe internet will be the tool to create and sustain a constant world language. Maybe it will be a variant of english, maybe not. But currently the internet's language is english so it has a great chance to become the language which will be mutually intelligible literally all over the world. Regarding that words in english differs much from their written form, it's imaginable that local dialects of english will arise, but i hope that the spelling and grammar will be preserved.

World language would need:

Declensions for different word orders,
Short words/syllables,
Easy to pronounce,
Able to me memorized easily.

Esperanto tried to do this, but it mainly became a cluster of european languages.

Imo, you'd need to make a language completely different from any others, e.g. no roots in any other languages, but still holding the same basic needs as stated above.

Actually, Lojban is the closest thing so far to what you have described. It tries to be an "absolutely logical language" with no cultural bias or irregular verbs.

I hope when you write your study you use the word "effect" and not "affect".

What? No cultural bias, huh? Lojban is based on English, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, Hindi and Spanish, you moron.
