So, language people. At least some of you learn your languages in a classroom environment. In several of my classes I've had to choose a "name" from the language to use when I'm in that class. Romance languages is easy, I just use the same root. My name is Viv, in Spanish my name is Viviana Alvarez, in French my name is Viviane, at my old school my name in spanish was Mario. I'm starting a new class now, Japanese. My normal strategy of using the same root is now impossible. My Japanese class is an independent study, but I'll feel ripped off if I go through Japanese 1 without getting a new name. So ITT we post our names in other languages, and we help other people figure out what their name is. The root of Viviana is something involving life, I think. It sounds kinda like vida, vie, vivir, vivacious, what have you. What's the Japanese equivalent? And if there's not a Japanese equivalent, then how should I choose my name?

The worst is coming up with Asian equivalents for an English name, because there are no real equivalents. Unless your name is like "Hope Flower" or something...

When I started learning Korean I had to pick a name. There was no equivalent... The girls in the class dubbed me Won Bin. I think it was supposed to be a cruel joke, but I'm not sure, since Won Bin is a famous actor in Korea, and I'm a pasty white dude.

viv means life in latin, so better go with japanese female names which relate to life.  some suggestions i have found out there are...

Kame/Kameko/Kameyo (all from kame, japanese of tortoise, symbolizing long life)

Kiyoe/Kiyoka/Kiyoko/Kiyomi/Kiyone/Kiyono/Kiyori (from kiyo -- Happy generation; connotes a scandal-free or pure life
Kiyoe, Kiyoka, Kiyoko, Kiyomi, Kiyone, Kiyono, Kiyori)

In Japanese your name is translated by sound, if your name is Viv, it'd be ヴィヴ(vivu), or ビブ(bibu). ヴィヴ is really hard to say for Japanese and usually it'll just sound just like ビブ anyways, so both choices work
