Russian or Japanese?

I like how they sound, which should I learn in university?

Which country do you plan on visiting? If neither, then learn Mandarin Chinese, they're going to take over the world you know...

Untrue, writing system is too unwieldy. Learn Russian, it is used throughout Russia, the Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan etc. Japanese is too unwieldy + complex, writing-wise.

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-11 8:28 ID:fQbtJnRm

LEARN JAPANESE!! I study Japanese at College and it really aint as difficult as everyone says it is - ok maybe the writing system is a -little- difficult lol, but everything else make way more sense than english.

Japanese women are hot.

i hope you are a troll, if not wait until you have been studying japanese for about 4 years.  japanese is easy to learn at first, but gets harder as it goes along.

You can learn the language better from a book than a university. I've seen Americans who speak German visit us here in Germany and they can't pronounce anything correctly.

>>4 can't make an intelligible sentence in Japanese and only write in romaji.

Americans and the English find it hard to pronounce many of the fricatives and rough sounds in german: they would pronounce "selbstverständlich" as "selbstverständleesh", as the "ch" sound is difficult for them to pronounce, whereas I find it easy due to the fact I am Scottish. Try pronouncing "it's a braw moonlicht nicht the nicht" correctly!

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-12 13:18 ID:aItpobzi

But who understand Scottish ?

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-12 17:45 ID:YEML5vL9

>>9

No-one. I could talk (in english) for 5 minutes and the average londoner/new yorker wouldn't have a clue what I'm saying. We roll our Rs, spit out CHs and generally gargle our way through language. Scottish english has a number of different registers: it goes from very formal, reasonably formal (my usual means of communication) all the way down to extreme slang. And then there are the regional dialects...

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-12 17:51 ID:ocYgeb+5

Try both.

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-14 8:16 ID:6S2j56db

ROFL scottish extreme slangs should be funny to hear (and impossible to understand)

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-14 15:13 ID:H6/6Hni8

The ch isn't too difficult. I've notice the dumb Americans can't pronounce ö and ü correctly. They pronounce them just like regular o and u.

In 1987, a young woman named Holly Ackerman was killed in a bizarre cult ritual. Now that you have read her name, she will come to you in the night and pay you a horrifying visit. You MUST do the following:

1. Watch the video "R.I.P. Holly Ackerman" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIy2AymZywk

2. Post this message 3 times

Well, I can speak Russian, Japanese, &bit of Francaise and here's what I have to say:
1. Russian has medium-complexity grammar, rather strict phonetics, sounds fun and nice but sometimes is hard to pronounce. Russian women are hot. Russian men are desperate. It maybe a bit hard to learn how to speak, but their writing system is ok. Also, Russian is rather wide-spread in CIS(former USSR territories). To live in a bit barbaric Russia can be painful, but ok (and even GREAT, if you get used to it)
2. Japanese is easy to speak and sounds nice, since there are only 46 phonemas there, but rather hard to understand wtf they're talking about, because of omonims and other japan-specific shit (you won't find that in Russian). Grammar is easy, but their writing system is HELL (though not such hell as Chinese). Japanese women are damn scary (in general), but they have cute schoolgirl fukus. Japanese men are bad drinkers and nerdy(in general). But Japan produces anime and games. Also, you won't find much of Japanese outside Japan, which is rather small. Living in Japan is HELL for a foreigner (in general)

If you aim for business (oil, gas, metals, new markets, new prospects, etc) or you like Russian culture (which is great, btw) -- Russian. If you aim for hi-tech something or you are a anime&game-fan -- Japanese.

Russian will kill you with its grammatical exceptions. It's a very hard language I wouldn't recommend unless you're a linguaphile or amazingly dedicated to learning it. (Which you'll have to be, if you're gonna be in college.)

Name: Anonymous 2007-06-27 23:51 ID:f1gpdMjq

>>28

It's not as hard as some of the Finno-Ugric languages, but yeah, the conjugations are really fucking touchy depending on all sorts of shit.

>>8

You know, I would pronounce the "ch"s in Deutsch like the way it is in Hebrew or like the letter Х in Russian, but I always hear native Deutschen pronounce it like "sh", especially when they say "Ich".

Explain that shit? Confuses the hell out of me why some pronounce it one way, when others don't.

>>21

Name: Anonymous 2007-07-01 17:55 ID:13PvXka6

>>29

It depends on the letter before or after it.

Ch = x when before or after a, o, and u.

Ch = sh-like sound when before or after i and e.

There might be exceptions to this, idk

hey hey! I'm russian, and I'm learnign Japanese, so I have experience in both languages. In truth, both are difficult in their own way. Russian is a bit more complicated, but only has 36 letters. On the other hand, Japanese pronounciation and sentence structure is a bit easier, but they have 2 different alfabets with over 40 chracters each, plus all that Kanji...I dunno, up to you. But personaly, i know both, and like Jaoanese alot better.
