I think sage is supposed to 'work' by adding 1 to the post count, like any other post, but while not bumping the thread.  Supposedly higher post counts leads to earlier thread deletion. 

I've once heard someone comment though that since the imageboards have so much activity post count never comes into play, so saging does nothing. If people don't like getting saged I guess it is doing its job regardless.

outside of 4chan most image boards don't move so fast so a sage has more meaning. also sage doesn't always mean the poster doesn't like the thread. it can be useful to not bump a thread if you are replying to a specific person who already posted in the thread (and thus likely to come back to the thread and check it) to keep the general public (trolls) from seeing that the thread has activity.

It's only furries in furfag threads who say sage doesn't work, in an effort to stop XJ9 sagefloods from keeping their rampant faggotry at bay.

4chan's users have totally missed the point of sageing. People think that sageing is an insult to the OP, but in fact, it's an insult to themselves, as sage is meant to be used when your own post isn't worthy of bumping the thread.

People who come to /b/ and don't even try to appreciate the other boards. They think the internet is lulzy and "zomg /B/ all the time" (caps intended). Sage might seem pointless in forums where threads are instantly page 2 or 3'd, but that doesn't change the fact that you can still sage to express personal distaste and move on to another thread.

tl;dr sage has lots of meanings, get over it
