I never understood why people hate FF VII, honestly. It seems that the majority of people who have some unfathomable dislike for the game just hate it for the fact that it's so popular, which makes no sense to me. I wasn't trying to start an argument or anything; the limited edition system looks cool, and I'm a fan of the game so I thought I'd share it with the board.
I don't understand it either. Even if you think the game is overrated, or you don't like it, you should at least be able to see that it's a good game(production, music, gameplay) in general, and to people who enjoy turn based RPGs. If people disklike it because it is popular, then something about the way people determine how a game can be good or bad is seriously wrong.

Well, it just isn't as good as FFVIII, that's what I don't like about it. Other than that it's a perfectly fine generic JRPG.

...the issue is that it's really generic shite that had a very large budget and nobody in the US had seen anything like it before
so fanboys like yourself played the hell out of it and are still jacking off to it ten years later
it's okay if you masturbate to nostalgia...but the rest of us who aren't are really sick of hearing you do it

Sure, it's not groundbreaking. And sure you can baww over how it's not as good as a game made AFTER it. But it's still a good, solid game. Most people probably bitch about the localization, or how the characters don't look good. But seriously, can you expect beautiful graphics and absolutely polished gameplay for a series first foray into a new console?
It's like people who bitch about FFX or some other near-launch ps2 title. They just don't always come out the way you expect.
I like FFVII myself, it wasn't my first Final Fantasy, it was my fourth.

My guess is that people like to feel "oldschool" and "hardcore" by saying FF7 is overrated and how much better FF6 is.

Sorry, Mr. Same Person, we are comparing it to FF8, which is superior due to the fact that it is a FF1 remake.
i liek FF7, i just think they should have 100% completed the game. or waited 'till the xbox 360 or ps3 came out, thus making it superb in all ways.

I don't like FFVII. Here's why. ****NOTE**** when i say that FFVII sucks, I basically mean that it wasnt as good as FFVI, FFVIII, FFIX, or FFX. ****End NOTE****
Hiroyuki Itō wasnt in this project - where he had been in every single FF before it. He was part of the creation process in every one of the previous games(as well as FFVIII and FFIX) and designed many of the fan favorite concepts that are used in the FF universe. But, wasnt in FFVII. And? Well, I'm not going to say that he was the lynch pin to FF's success - he's not, but he's definitely part of it.
FFVII was the "break out" FF, followed by the next "break out" FF, FFIII. These went away from the fantasy worlds with fantasy aspects and breached into a mixture of a modern world with elements contemporary to our own alongside the mixture of fantasy. It's not as dreamscape'd. I don't want to think of evil corporations ruining existence for me when I play a fantasy RPG - I get to play real life enough.
FFVII had some pretty fucking gay moments. If there was an emo edition of FF, its 7. People who like this game best in the FF series like to say that there was a lot of player-character emotion sharing. Aka, "I fell in love with this game because I felt I could relate to Cloud." You're a faggot. Same goes for 8(well...i loved 8 ALOT, but it still had gay moments). Shit same goes for any game that has Yoshinori Kitase had lead directing/writing/scenario concepting. Ya, I fucking said it, Yoshinori Kitase sucks. Kingdom Hearts? Faggy. KH2? Faggy and emo. FFX? well..I loved it actually. FFX-2 Faggy, emo, copypasta to me. After the chain of emo ass games he's been making/producing no he's going to be the thing that makes me hate FFXIII and OP love it - its a promise.
To continue from the above paragragh, Yoshinori Kitase sucks. I hate him. Buying Kingdom Hearts is like buying Yoshinori Kitase in a fucking box. He fucked the whole franchise up (even when he redeemed himself some with FFVIII and FFX) by coming in at FFV and not having a proper grasp of wtf made/makes FF so great. A little Yoshinori Kitase goes a long way. FFVI where he co-directed with Hiroyuki Itō was a great combo. Then for some fucking reason, he got to direct FFVII entirely by himself, and co-write. Result? the first shitty FF game with crappy mechanics (loved KoTR though...) that was more about the "concept," relating to the character, and writing then it was the enjoyability of an entire game. Fuck him. Hiroyuki Itō was responsible for most of the mechanics that makes FF great. Wasnt in VII and Yoshinori Kitase's faggy ass ruined it on his own. FFVII was different because of Yoshinori Kitase's directing. It sucked because of Yoshinori Kitase's directing. ****sub-note**** writing and concept work is fundamental to games - I can appreciate and actually somewhat admire Yoshinori Kitase for his attention to this area, but lots of writing and concept work becomes lost when its translated and given to a culture with different outlooks/views - and when it subtracts designers' attention to the playability/mechanics of the game.
Map of FFVII is just Eng/Scotland, a weird angle of North America+invisible mexico+South America+Greenland, and China+Korea+Japan. No fucking joke. Look at it again. I saw that when I first played the game. Moar "don't leave reality" plz.
I liked the female characters in FFVII a lot. They weren't annoying an Princess. Points given there.
Seph is a pretty cool guy blah blah.
My FF favs in order of best.

Everybody hates it but I've never seen anyone on 4chan who actually understood the whole story.
While its fine to hate the game because its long and the battle system is boring, it did have some likable characters, the materia system was cool, and back when it first came out and all of you were younger it was the first RPG to have a serious kinda dark storyline.
It might just be me but when I was a kid I loved it, I don't play it anymore and have no will to do so but I won't say I don't still like it mostly for nostalgia reasons.

Oh, I don't know. Good plot, dialogue, and presentation? FFVII's plot was HORRIBLE shit, and if you tried to fill in the story's gaps, the fucking thing would turn around and tell you that wasn't what happened the second you did it. It was a muddled piece of shit with maybe a tiny bit of entertainment value, but nothing important could possibly be learned by playing it. The game pretty much shot its load within the first two hours, and once you were out of Midgar the game sucked ass to the Nth degree. Not only that, but it had long since been bested in storytelling, dialogue, and everything that actually matters in an RPG; if you're playing an RPG for the combat, you're a fucking retard and should be playing something else. Or you should just commit suicide for thinking that "HURF DURF PRESSAN X TO MAKE FAGGOT HIT FAGGOT FOR X DAMAGE" is fun.
There's a reason you should be have a philosophy/writing degree if you're going to attempt to write a deep story. FFVII shows off why you should, but by doing everything wrong.

i disliked it cos music annoyed me and gameplay was slower than deep south rednecks discussing higher literature (the hungry caterpillar). then again i was 9 at the time and the outdoors was more fun.

Hey, so... you've never heard of Final Fantasy 4 or 6, huh? Those had serious storylines, and 6's was considerably darker than 7's.
The Materia system wasn't cool, either, it was a reworked, broken version of the espers in 6.
Exactly what was dark in 6's storyline? As I remember it, 4, 6, and 7 had pretty much equally dark storylines - not at all.

Except that the Esper system kind of, well, sucked. Materia allowed for a diversity of neat tricks to be applied, giving it depth that no FF game had done with magic yet.

It's not really all hate. A lot of us who played it were relatively unimpressed. It was a good, decent FF, but that's it. Then you head over to internetland and there are people tossing eachother off about how it's the best game ever. Then you try to say: "Well not really, it has this, and this, and this flaw" and are met with "lol hating things that are popular"
