I got my invite on 11/27. Here are my impressions in a general (but not quite) chronological order.
Day 1
* Holy crap, 7 gigs to download? This better be good!
Day 2
* 24 hours later - holy crap, 12 gigs installed? This better be good!
* Start a character, I'm on a really ugly looking beach. I tune things a little bit via the in-game gui but stay out of the debug tab. Now it's running at 1280x res and things are a little less fugly, but I wouldn't call it pretty. Nearly any first or third person game in the last 5 years looks better than this - maybe more than that, I think UT99 looked better.
* Run into a lot of walls on my way to Tortage. Between boundary walls, an overwhelming darkness, and pirates that seem to pop out of nowhere (probably because of the darkness), this is 30 minutes of no-fun. But, I get to the end, slay the slaver, and enter the town.
* Loading times are horrible. This took over 5 minutes to load Tortage. Then, there was a lot of stuttering as I got attacked by pirates. I managed to somehow evade them while stuttering and thankfully a higher level player drew them off of me. No idea where I'm going, again, not very fun. I finally stumble on Tortage itself and enter the inn.
* Loadings times are horrible. I experience three in a row - Inn, Nighttime, Tortage. This has to go. Not only does it take forever to load, but there's a lot of stuttering afterward.
* Night time looks just like daytime. I think it might actually be brighter as I can see where I'm going now. WTF? Where's the night?
* I stumble around and eventually log off. I don't remember where I was but it was still in nighttime.
Day 3
* Um. I'm floating in the ocean. I don't show up on the map. I'm so far out that I can't see any land. This sucks.
* 20 minutes later I find land. I'm waaaaaaaaaaay SW of Tortage. I managed to find the beach you crash land on at the start, but at night it is surrounded by invisible walls. I can't even make it out of the beach and back into the ocean, apparently you can come in but can't leave.
* After another 20 minutes of trying to figure out how to change the chat channel (Why does it show [Vicinity] in the chat title but show responses in Global in that window? Very confusing), someone mentions to another player how to get combos on their hotbar. I can't find the combos, but I found Heart of Acheron. After another 2 or 3 minutes of loading, I can finally move again!
* After spending an hour just trying to get somewhere where I show up on the map, I'm almost too damn tired to actually play. I make it through a few quests to listen to arias and quesado or something. Quesado's quest is lame. The marker for "Get on the roof" is NOT where you can get on the roof. It's where you need to be afterward. This is really stupid as you CAN get onto the roof from the second level of that building by jumping on the crate then over to the roof. However, you have to go up the ladder or the quest won't move on. Put the marker at the ladder if that's where you need to go.
* I make it up to the volcano to begin a quest there. This is after dying in the swamp by Arias a few times. Since the minimap doesn't have a lot of details, even when you zoom in, and the entrance is actually behind the marsh, I ran into the marsh looking for it. You take environmental damage there. No idea why, never did figure it out, but it's a lot and you don't last long. After the 2nd or 3rd death, I finally found the other path that goes to the side of the marsh and wraps around. That took way too long.
* By following the Destiny Quest progression, I am now level 7 at the Volcano. These guys are between level 10 and 15. After dying a few times, I log out. This is NOT fun. At least the resurrect loading screens are quick!
Day 4
* Loading times and FPS seem to be working much smoother today. Loading screens are as short as 30 seconds (although most are still near 60s) and my FPS is mostly higher, 24-30. Stuttering is gone...until I give up on the volcano quest (someone in chat says I should be at least level 11) and go back to daytime Tortage.
* Daytime Tortage blows. Lots of stuttering. 5-10 seconds with no screen updates - no disk thrashing, my computer isn't on fire, just nothing happens. Getting around is a pain. Finding stuff is a pain. I complete a few quests and log off.
* Combat is tedious. There is no skill in pressing buttons in the proper order. There is only tedium. I'd rather have one-button-press combos than this system. I'm willing to do the multiple button presses if there's actual skill involved, like parrying an enemy's attack or actual aiming, but not in the current state.
* Character progression - When you enter the city you're told to go see Tina. Then she tells you do some stuff that sets you on a quest progression. If you follow this progression, you're woefully under-levelled by the time you get to the Volcano. The game punishes you for doing what you're told and following a logical path. It's also very aggravating when you're repeating with new characters - you don't want to fetch four fish for the beggar when all you want to do is get OUT of Tortage! Make the destiny quest progression smoother, auto-levelling with the player, or force the character back to daytime quests before allowing them to continue past what their level allows.
* Moving around is tedious. The minimap has very little detail to it and there appears to be no way to adjust it to be larger or show more, just zoom levels. I have a few quests where I have no idea how to get to the actual endpoints, I can only get close, where close means there's a cliff or wall or something in my way and I don't see any way around it. Between this and the constant stuttering, it's horrible.
* Talking to NPCs. I can highlight an NPC and there is a talk icon that shows in the bottom right. If I click on it, nothing happens - I don't talk and I don't move toward the NPC. I strongly feel that there should be *some* command or key-sequence that moves you toward the NPCs you've highlighted. Same thing with enemies, you can click on one and see their status but you can't move toward them to attack. If you could click on the ground near them to move, that would be fine. Using WASD the entire time to move is horrible.
* Keybindings. Regular keybindings I use are WASD and 1-3 (left side), then pipe (right side), then X (left side). There is a auto-run but that's num-lock (far right, better to take my right hand off the mouse to hit it). U (right side) is the use/climb button. Ctrl is a meta character to make things like Tab for targeting work, but when you hit it, your character movement stops. Not only should we be able to rebind keys, but the defaults require too much movement across the keyboard.
* Graphics - as many have said, the placeholder graphics are shared between a lot of entities. Also, when you talk to people, they do not turn to look at you if you stand behind them, and they often do weird animations, like the female dance, while telling you something important. Very disconcerting. Obviously there are tons of improvements yet to be made, but are these things even on the roadmap? Hard to tell.
* UI - A lot of pieces of the UI are missing keyboard shortcuts (Quest screen, I'm looking at you). Others have mentioned the inconsistent use of Escape. A lot of other details are not there yet (I have no Feats points, but I don't see where it says "0 Feats Points"). The UI as a whole is huge and obtrusive, instead of being overlays that can be moved around and resized, it's panels that narrow your view. Make the views into overlays, so I can look at my quests and still have access to the minimap or my inventory.
* Beta situation and direction. I could be missing out on some of this info, so please correct me if I'm wrong. This is a General Beta. It plays like a Technical Beta. Low FPS, stuttering, can't click on dialog options, minimap disappears, warped around after relogging in, tons of item database entries are missing and take forever to load, loading screens take forever. These aren't insurmountable problems, but I also have not seen any sort of roadmap, i.e. "These things are completed, these things are targeted soon, and these things are on the future development tree." Right now, when you stumble on a bug, you don't know if that feature has even been implemented, whether it's on the roadmap, if it's a new bug, or if that's how it's supposed to work and the supporting text just needs updated. The developers say to fill out a bug report for all the bugs. Without some direction, almost the entire game looks like one big bug - graphics, gamma, database entries, combat issues, loading screens, where do you stop? This Beta needs some serious direction posted someplace prominent and hopefully viewable from within the game as well.
* Overall performance issues. On Wednesday, I was excited to get into the Beta. Now, on Saturday morning, I'm not even willing to log in again for a few days. I've got a house to clean, a yard to rake, Christmas shopping to do, I have to spend some time with my wife, there's football on the TV, I've got some home projects to work on, and the last thing I can afford to do is spend 10 minutes trying to log in and load a new zone just to spend another 10 minutes trying to figure out where I'm going and not die during the stuttering. The technical performance issues are hampering my ability to contribute, both from a time stance and an "I don't care to deal with it" stance. Focus on making the game playable, then I'll be willing to spend some time helping to find bugs.

To counteract all that, here are some good points.
* Aside from fetch quests, most of the quests are more rewarding than "Kill X animals and bring me their hides." Attempting to contact someone while fighting through the army between you and him is much more interesting, even if it could be summed up as "kill 15 minions of ____ boss."

Darkfall, if it ever gets released, will probably be the answer to the utter fail that is the day's MMORPGs but it has like 5 people total working on it so don't expect it any time soon.

I am in the beta, this game is aweful. It looks like something they dug up from 1999 and are serving up cold. Horrible loading times even on top end pcs, ugly animations and graphics, REVOLUTIONALY combat system is a farking joke, the list goes on and on.
I run Oblivion with max graphics, no stuttering EVER, fluid animation, extremely fast load times....
and for Age of Conan to run like THIS?? You gotta be kidding me.
I don't care if one is single player and the other is MMORPG, the freaking graphics shouldn't cause THIS much stuttering, especially considering i have a 512 meg RAM vid card and 3.5 gigs of RAM, 3.0 ghz dual core processor...
Makes no sense. I fucking completely reworked my HD to install this game with no fragmentation, etc, and it STILL stutters like it's having an epileptic siezure.
What a major disappointment. There is no way they can fix all this shit before retail release.
I gave up the game ever I got 3 quests to go to White Sands Isle, and then when I clicked the boat to go, it said I needed a quest to go there...I HAVE THREE FUCKING QUESTS THERE!!!!!

SO yeah, if you choose pvp it means anyone can attack you for any reason anywhere with no way to stop them. It'll be a nonstop gankfest as it was in the first zone after the city on my server. 0 progress is being made so nobody can lvl past 6 unless you grind earlier areas. So now that pvp is seemingly a waste of your time cuz people will gank for no reason.. you're left with pve. Ok, so my quests are all being a step and fetch parcel boy and then hey go grind this cuz I said so. So far I've seen anything innovative 4 hours later.. and somehow evading those ganking and the game is just... well.. boring? I'm playing vanguard/wow/tabula rasa all over again apparently...oh well. I guess I can save my 50$ cuz I was given the test code to see what it was about. If you play it and have fun.. more power to you. At least I know I can go off and do other things and am not missing anything.

I just call those games massively online time wasters. I've never spent so much time doing nothing than when I played WoW. Lasted two months and then I threw the discs in the trash.

Things about Age of Conan that are just like all the rest of the boring mmorgs including the wildly popular WoW, Everquest 2, Tabula Rasa, Vanguard, etc.
Obviously none of these dev retards realize what was fun about successful games.
Age of Conan, again, missing the mark about the #1 reason to play.
To have fun!
In no particular order:
1) No weather. No rain, wind, swaying trees, arrows blown off course, tornadoes, thunder, lightning, snow, slippery ice, etc.
2) No geological events. No earthquakes, landslides, quicksand (that would be fun!), etc
3) No ambushes (At least Tabula Rasa and Halo have ambushes). Would be nice to be adventuring and a random event happens like an NPC fight, players get to help or defend and get special items for the effort win/lose/draw.
4) Screwed up ideas of instances. Lets have 50 players in the same instance doing the same chain of quests, spending 20 minutes fighting their way to the boss and then wait in line to kill it. Or, just run straight to it since the other 49 players, also waiting to kill it keep the instance cleared. Thats so fun! Hey, you can switch instances, but only after the long trek back to a res point! WOOOHOO!
Here's an idea. Auto group anyone standing near the boss spawnpoint, auto increase the difficulty for the group and increase loot/xp! Duhhhh!!
5) Mounts at level 40?, not 20 or 10?. How original. Cant event rent one, or get a donkey maybe that can pull a cart with your harvesting items? Everyone on foot till 40 eh?
6) Too many zone loads watching the retarded loading screen. I know about texture loads and lag control, but Dark Age of Camelot did this in the old days with seamless zoning. That technology made game play smooth and fun as well as unpredictable. This by the way is one of the pluses of World Of Warcraft! Duhhhh Funcom.
7) No travel graphics or events. Just zone loading screens. Scenery between locations would be nice. Maybe swimming between islands would take an hour instead of by boat, but maybe you could get ambushed by a sea monster, or happen upon some unsuspecting pirates and rob them, etc.
8) No flying/levitation. In the original Everquest, not the loser sequel EQ2, levitation was fun, dangerous, and a great PVP tactic. The moron devs in all these other games haven't figured that out yet. Even the Blizzard dorks forgot that a flying mount could add more depth to the original world but left it out.
9) Necro has no fear spell? WTF!? Instilling fear in its enemies is a necro/shadowknight's bread and butter! AoE fears are a great element in PVP like in WoW.
10) No martial arts/monk class..
11) No bard class..
12) No player teleportation except for a "gate" function that takes you back to your bound town. Oh boy how original!
13) Elite's encounters have no indication of it. Including the quests that lead you to the elites.. The multi head group quests are not all marked.
14) No unique racial leveling. In old Everquest for example, Dark Elves leveled from 1-15 in almost a completely different environment than high elves. Even on different continents. Everyone starts in Tortage with a very slight variation on the same story line than everyone else. Gee, how nifty is that!?
15) No beast NPC's after 31 levels!? How about a dark pact with a medusa type old witch living deep within that volcano in tortage? A possible break from the monotonous boring story line that forever affects your destiny? Naaaaaa.
Plusses:
1) Its different than another pathetic re-roll on my 45th boring toon on World of Warcraft.
2) Its pretty, somewhat. At least for the first hour. Then all the NPC's begin to look like they are the same family. And all the scenery seems to be the same color schemes after a bit.
well the game is quite disappointing, I thought I didn't like it because I've played MMO's since I was 12 (im 17 now).
but it's just the game itself:
1: Load Times are Horrible.
2: The combat system is Horrible.
3: The story Line is too boring.
4: when you are the beginner it's hard to find Places, even thought they tried to make it easyer, it's an epic fail.
5: Graphics Remind me of Age of Methology! Especially at the start where you get off the ship!
6: This game is TOO BIG, maybe it's a good thing for some, but once again if you're getting started.. ehh.. if you have such a large map to walk on it's pretty annoying for quests that need to be done.
7: characters unique look, HAHA ye right, everyone looks exactly the same..
8: even thought now the lag is gone and most of the bugs are fixed, it's still not chalanging somehow..
For now I think some have to wait until the next expension of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

What are you talking about? This game is great. I get to relive the Hyborian age by having all the epic adventures of Conan and Red Sonya, with realistic fantasy combat like an action game, but online with a band of players who travel the land in search of loot and women, and although the rape sequences are censored, I'm hoping there will be a patch in the near future. Also, slaying the serpent emperor is epic in itself, I have never felt this good playing a game before, single player or otherwise. Remember in the movie where he grabs the snake head and rips it clean off? Yeah, it's better than that.
Every boss has a beautifully scripted action sequence, you think FFXI had some good cutscenes, goddamn this had some that made me cry. But you know what, the dynamic plot is great and all, hell I love eradicating an entire town of serpentmen just so the next group has nothing to do there but set up a few trading bazaars or set up a bandit camp, but honestly, the fun comes in just wandering. Wandering the desert and encountering completely random, batshit crazy enemies that are challenging, yeah, but they don't just kill you in one hit for being the wrong level. No, these things fight like they mean it, like you were watching 300 and controlling the goddamn action. You remember when one of the Spartans jumps and thrusts his spear in the guy's chest? That's got nothing on the combat system in this game.
They were right about the first twenty levels feeling like a single player game on its own. I would pay money just to play the single player portion on PS3. You know that Conan game they released on consoles? It's like an upgraded version, since they can refine the combat at any time with patches. So you're playing this game and then before you know it, fuck you're interacting with people all over the world who want to kick just as much ass as you do, like in the second movie where he picks up a random RPG party and starts kicking ass, and somehow they managed to get PVP right. I mean it's fun, actually fun, and you don't feel griefed just because someone comes out of hiding and attacks you. I don't know how they managed to balanced it, but it feels more like a fighting game with equal stats than a system that relies on level and stat differences.
Anyway, the name of the game speaks for itself- Age of Conan. What could be more badass?

I just bought this game from bestbuy... spent about 6 hours installing it... Man, it sucks ass. I mean, really. It must be the worst game I played in... well, ever. Admittedly, I only spent about half an hour playing it, but it's long enough to know that:
1) I'm not having fun, nor will I ever.
2) The engine sucks.
3) The graphics are subpar for a game in 2008. It would have been considered "good" in 2000.
4) The engine's performance is horrible for what I'm seeing on the screen.
5) The combat system isn't fun or challenging. It's boring because it's repetitive.
The game is an epic failure. Nothing can save it, honestly. What were they thinking? Who the hell is going to play this crap?

I don't know how I managed to level my Assassin to 56. I guess I figured the game will get better every level. This game is pure garbage guys. Questing and leveling in this game is pretty much like doing forced community service. PvP just makes you a target for gankers few levels above you; who wait for you to walk 20 minutes across the fucking map only to kill you so you can make that same walk again. This is a true WoW killer! When I saw the preview movies I said "WOW!". However after playing the game the wow was gone. Looks like a bunch of chimps designed it.

Yeah, that's nice, but this game already has too big and blatant issues to fix correctly before release, especially in the game engine itself. If it sucks now, it'll definitely still suck in these areas during release because there's no way they'll get enough time to fix it all.
ok it did suck at first but they just finnished the mistakes that they didnt get time to fix because they were rushed when they released this game, July 9th, is when they lets just say re released aoc and offer 2 freeweeks of gameplay for people that had left it previuosly, im glad i waited a year for it to be fixed now im having a ball, plus im a huge aoc fan
i agree aoc is a shit game its pvp has no point massivly over powered classes if u wana play a game where u run about geting kiled by higher lvl retards or over powered clases with no point to it play it.
