What you describe is the classic definition of RPG's. Naturally, as time passes and societies change, so too do word definitions, intents, and purposes. Now, while most RPG's on the market do not fall under the original definition of the acronym RPG (creating your own character and "living" that characters' role/life), it is now generally acceptable to consider non-create-your-own-character RPG's as RPG's.
