People who've been playing videogames for 10 years = In a dire state of quality deprivation.

That's the only explanation for shitfests like ICO, Katamari, Disgaea, SoTC, God of War, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear, (I'm sure I could list more but I hardly give a damn to remember half of them) making anywhere near competent sales. Not to mention the ongoing roster of extremely shitty jrpgs.

People who've only been playing videogames for 5 years = Too stupid to not see shit if it was infront of their faces.

You know the industry is complete shit when there's demand for a game like Kingdom Hearts in an existing demographic, to not only be made but sell well.

Last salvation for anyone who want's something new from developers who know how to make games not suck?

Handhelds? Well some handheld games are good but. Their development is dictated by a batteries life. You can only have games made a specific way. Not to mention you have to recharge the damn thing. And any self respecting person cares about their stuff won't be leaving the house with a handheld unless it's for a vacation I imagine.

But that's beside the point. If I decide to leave the house, not only would I not want my nice stuff outside where it could get damaged, stolen or lost. But I leave the house TO leave what's at my house. I go looking for something else to do that I can't do at home.

So where're the good console games hmm?

People who have been playing games for 10 years probably have a job by now and therefore more disposable income. Why do shitty games sell more now? Because people have more money to waste on shit. Most of the games you listed had some kind of gameplay innovation and media muscle behind it; as a result they sold in big numbers even though you didn't like it.

Kingdom Hearts being popular makes the industry complete shit? Then maybe it was already complete shit 10 years ago when games like Talespin, Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, Chip & Dale, Fantasia,  Aladdin, and other Disney titles were being pushed out every year. The Disney license sells, and if you didn't notice this in all your years of gaming then you must be blind or very ignorant.

Let's see, handhelds. Battery life means nothing as long as you put in enough save points, which all these games have done. This is the only required element in all handhelds, and it does not hinder games in any way; people like saving games anywhere. Every type of game that existed on consoles had a counterpart on a handheld; battery life be damned.

Now, the handheld demographic is where you went completely overboard and missed the mark entirely. You know where the majority of handheld owners are? The schoolyard playground. Yes, there are older gamers that spend money to keep their hardware in pristine condition, but the majority of handhelds will belong to kids. The Game Boy Advance was built with the durability of a Fisher-Price toy because Nintendo knew the majority of those units would be bombarded with sand, 3 foot falls to the pavement, chocolate milk, and the cruelest of punishments kids had to offer.

You also have to understand the changing demographic as well; if you were playing Metroid when it first came out and about to finish high school, there's a reasonable chance you would have a kid old enough to play handhelds by now. More sophisticated games are coming out for handhelds now to draw parents to play them so the purchase of a handheld can be multi purpose.

As for the good console games? They're out there and you just happen to hate all of them. I'm an older gamer and my R-Type Final, Gradius collection, Shinobi, Contra: Shattered Soldier, Mech Assault, and countless other games in my collection still get a good playthrough.

I like how he just lists the big sellers as shit.
Obviously if they're going well, they're good games in the minds o f many people. You're just pissed the market isn't latched into your little niche you like.

I'm a part of the demographic that's been playing videogames for 10+ years. I got my original Nintendo when I was 7. I'm 23 years old now and have been playing ever since.

Admittedly, there is little out there that is directed to my demographic on consoles. This is because people who sit at my demographic mostly have jobs and/or lives now. We have the income to purchase the games yes, but not the time to devote to them at home. The last time I've been able to sit infront of a console for more than 2 hours at a time was.. back when Final Fantasy 7 first came out. I was in the middle of highschool then.

As you mentioned, the only games for our demographic these days are on handhelds. My NDS gets far more use than any of my consoles sitting in my livingroom. This is because I can take it with me to work and play it while I'm on my break or lunch. There's also 5 other people I know that all take their NDS or GBA to work with them too. It's really the system of choice for my demographic.

Consoles are for the kiddies who have time at home after school. This is why all the games that children enjoy are on these systems. This works fine for me as long as decent titles keep coming out on GBA and NDS.

My DS has more than 640 games on it, needless to say, it is the only videogame system I play.

Last time I checked, the main demographic for console gaming these days were guys in their late teens through early twenties. Videogames aren't just a kiddy thing anymore, and games aimed at the older crowd are what's causing all the controversy with the overprotective and irresponsible dipshit parents.

And Ico didn't make competant sales. I'm pretty sure that it bombed, and for good reason. Constant escort mission = fail, with the selection of a VERY select few. (the only one that comes to mind is Resident Evil 4)

Listen- not all of the people in the 10+ years demographic are working (been playin since I was 4(YA RLY), i'm just about 15 mow)

my first game memories- Duck hunt, metroid, and zelda.
then my uncle gave me his SNES because he started getting into computergames more. (I shoulda done the same, cept' I still had a freakin DOS comp, I was still 6)
Played Super metroid, SMRPG, ZeldaIII, mechwarrior, and countless other games. Finally, i got a Playstation, and some games for it, and then the N64- Goldeneye was freakin awesome.
FF7 was one I could play endlessly too. PS2, we all know about KH, but Wildarms 3 was fun for what it was (one of the only battle systems where people accualy move, and still start on a face off.)
As of now, i'm playing a hell of alot of mmo's and playing with roms/emus.

KAL Online(SCREW YOU- its fun as heck, untill a +16g40 w/ X-blow lv 4 breaks on you!)
Ragnarok Online (Both a P/S and iRO- once I learn korean i'll play kRO)
Maplestory(LV46 Fighter and proud- MAGES ARE FOR n00bs!)

GUNZ - not a real mmo, but still fun as hell.

I've been playing games for 10+ years, and I'm turning 20 in about a month. I've had something to play games on pretty much all my life. Commodore64, Sega Mega Drive, N64, Xbox, and PC all the way through. I could never be called a hardcore gamer, and likely anyone that calls me a "gamer" will probably get a punch in the mouth. but I'm happy with the state of video games that are around. I enjoyed Gianna Sisters and Impossible Mission on the C64, I played all the sonic games to death on the Sega, and let's not get started on Banjo on the N64. fucking addictive, that was. Halo, GTA, and Doom on the XBOX still don't fail to amuse me, and I play a million different games on the PC, and I can't keep track of them. (my current fave of the week is fallout again. damn that game's good.)
