I have been neglecting fighting games for several years, and would like to buy some older games for cheap just to memorize some moves and experience what people that were going through the series experienced. What series would be worth playing the older games through, or at least getting used to character moves for playing a later sequel?

Also, how do you memorize moves and how long do they stay in your memory? I find Tekken and Mortal Kombat the hardest to memorize as directions don't flow smoothly like SF.

You mean like go through KoF 95-99? Just get everything on Dreamcast.

Teken, Mortal Kombat, Campcom VS SNK, Marvel VS Capcom, There was one relesed not long ago, like 1 or 2 years, and they just made a sequle to it. It came out for all 3 systems at the time, Xbox PS2 and NGC. I can't rember the name but it was a good game.
As far as getting use to moves, that varries from game to game. Even if you go and buy Mortal Kombat 1 for the SNES the move are different from Mortal Kombat Zub Zero. So basicly all you can do is pick one. There is no real way train for future games.

So learning everything in Mortal Kombat Trilogy won't make you a better player at what comes afterwards?

Garou - Mark of the Wolves <--- awesome
Last Blade
Darkstalkers 2 or 3.
All Neo Geo and SNK focus on now would be the more recent KoF / Vs
series .. But they o have the collectors edition of their older games. But I recomend playing King of Fighters 99' .. It's common ,and you'll learn basically all the recent King of Fighter moves.
Street Fighter Aniversary Collection for PS2 / Xbox is pretty useful for the more recent Street Fighter games..
All I could name off so far. Oh! and the Real Bout Fatal Fury Series.

Street Fighter III
Guilty Gear series is also fun.
Virtua Fighter, though it's got a steep learning curve
and probably the arc one is even better, those are on atomiswave right?
Such a shame it'll never come to the US, lest little jimmy find out its a hentai novel on the pc. And for that matter, console US React. Oh well, that game (react) is more fun to me than any other series I've played, there are other good ones, but the one I'd love for the console makers to embrace and bring to a place where I can whomp kids in it with ciel would make me play console games with people again. Until then it's portable emulation all the way.
